This job is no longer available, it expired on the Monday 30th November -0001

Salary: £ 4494

This post is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme is offering an individual the opportunity to apply for a freelance contract to record 2400 artefacts between 11th September 2006 and 23rd March 2007. The assistant will help the West Midlands Finds Liaison Officers in recording archaeological finds through the use of digital images.

You will be required to photograph or digitally capture images of archaeological objects and digitally manipulate them according to standards set by the Portable Antiquities Scheme. These images will need to be of the highest quality as they will form part of the permanent record on the PAS database (www.finds.org.uk). You will be required to submit regular reports on the progress of the project and number of objects processed.

You should have a good working knowledge of photography and a proven track record in both digital photography and digital image manipulation. Experience of handling archaeological artefacts is also desired, as is a basic awareness of how different archaeological artefact types are usually illustrated. You should have a working knowledge of an image manipulation programme such as Adobe Photoshop or its equivalent. Previous experience of working within an archaeological organisation or museum with an emphasis on finds recording and processing would be an advantage.

It is anticipated that there will be 100-150 objects per week for digital recording. The work has to be carried out at Ludlow Museum Resource Centre as, due to the nature of the artefacts, no material will be allowed off site and all equipment and materials will be provided. You will also be expected to waive your copyrights for all images taken and manipulated throughout the employment period.

For an informal talk about the project contact Peter Reavill – (Finds Liaison Officer – Shropshire and Herefordshire), Ludlow Museum Resource Centre, 7-9 Parkway, Ludlow, Salop. SY8 2PG on 01584 813 641 or e-mail peter.reavill@shropshire-cc.gov.uk

To apply for this contract please send a CV and covering letter to include personal background and experience, a method statement and a small portfolio (preferably on CD-ROM) of images of archaeological artefacts which demonstrate your ability to carry out this project to the above address. Please also provide the name and contact details of two referees, preferably one of whom has knowledge of your photographic work. Please also confirm your availability to begin work on the project in September 2006. The fee for this work will be £4494 inclusive of all expenses. The closing date for submissions is 31st August 2006 and the successful applicant will be notified on 4th September.

Please note we will not be able to return the image portfolio unless you provide suitable SAE with the postage already paid.
