Finds Liaison Assistant Wiltshire

Salary: £ 17,000 pro rata

Contract duration: 7 months

Reporting to: Finds Liaison Officer

Responsible for: Volunteers, Placements

Working with: Finds Liaison Officer

Working days/hours: Full-time – 35 hours per week (to include some weekends/evenings)

Purpose:
The Finds Liaison Assistant (FLA) will be responsible to the Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) for Wiltshire based at Salisbury Museum. This post has been supported by the Headley Trust and will be based at the Salisbury museum and is full time for up to 7 months.

The FLA is a temporary role developed to help the FLO record archaeological finds reported to us. Finds can come from all periods and be made from a variety of materials. Although finds mostly come from Wiltshire they sometimes come from further afield. Recording needs to be accurate and consistent. Records are created on the online PAS database and include measurements, text descriptions and photographs. The FLO may also require assistance in outreach activities that involve speaking to the public, as well as supervising and training volunteers.

The successful candidate will be an archaeologist with experience of identifying archaeological finds. The ideal candidate will have experience of using databases and manipulating photographs. Knowledge of the PAS and Treasure Act is expected. It is likely that the FLA will focus on recording backlog finds of Roman date, due to the link with Historic England’s Verlucio and Environs project; the FLA will support both PAS work and the project by recording backlogs finds of Roman date from the Verlucio region and other comparable landscapes.

The successful applicant will spend 6 weeks working with Historic England on the Verlucio and Environs project. A minimum of 4 of these weeks will be spent on site in north-west Wiltshire, undertaking excavation, finds and environmental processing and recording. An extensive training programme will be provided, and the FLA will undertake this as one of a range of training placements and postgraduate students being trained on the project. The remaining week(s) will be spent undertaking finds and environmental processing at the Historic England facilities at Fort Cumberland, Portsmouth. This period will also include opportunities to learn about the wider work of HE. Good quality self-catering accommodation will be provided by HE for work periods in the field and at Fort Cumberland, although no additional subsistence expenses are available.
