Location: The main work base will be the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter.

A secondary work base will be Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton.

Contract: Fixed term until 31 March 2020. The post may continue after this date subject to funding.

We are seeking a full-time Finds Liaison Officer to join a small team, which delivers the Portable Antiquities Scheme across three counties in the south west of England. This new role will work three days a week to deliver the Scheme across Devon, taking a lead in the area. Two days a week they will work as a job share with the Somerset Finds Liaison Officer, carrying out agreed recording tasks and providing cover as required.

The successful candidate will have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline, or considerable relevant experience and specialist knowledge of finds recording. You must have a flexible approach and be willing to work outside normal office hours e.g. to attend meetings.

As Finds Liaison Officer you will make contact with members of the public such as metal-detector users, explain the aims of the Scheme and the Treasure Act to the public and heritage professionals and identify, research and record finds on the Portable Antiquities Scheme's database.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users, to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology.

The South West Heritage Trust works in partnership with Dorset County Council, Devon County Council and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, (Exeter City Council) to run this scheme across Somerset, Dorset and Devon. The postholder will work closely with the other Finds Liaison Officers, in particular the Somerset Finds Liaison Officer based in Taunton.

The postholder will be based at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, three days a week but will be required to travel throughout the three counties, including weekly or bi-weekly to Taunton and other locations across Devon, including locations inaccessible by public transport.

This is a fixed term appointment and continuation will be subject to the agreement of partners and PAS funding from April 2020. Current funding derives from the British Museum, Royal Albert Memorial Museum (Exeter City Council), Devon County Council and South West Heritage Trust.
