Surrey County Council is seeking to appoint a part-time Finds Liaison Officer to support and develop the work of the Council’s Heritage Conservation Team, based at Kingston-Upon-Thames. The role will also involve working closely with the Portable Antiquities Scheme staff based at the British Museum in London, and involve significant opportunities for working with the wider Surrey archaeological community, both amateur and professional.

Surrey County Council is a County Planning Authority responsible for dealing with planning applications for minerals and waste development, and for the County Council’s own development proposals, which include Education and Highways Management. The Heritage Conservation Team is part of the Environment and Infrastructure directorate and provides advice, guidance and heritage-related planning advice to a number of organisations, as well as to the general public.

The post will involve the identification and cataloguing and recording on the national database of a wide range of archaeological objects, ranging from the relatively mundane and commonplace, through to the unusual, unique and spectacular, as well as significant public liaison and outreach work involving travel throughout Surrey.

The successful candidate will likely be an archaeological finds specialist with a broad knowledge of a wide range of artefact types outside of their core specialism, and a comprehensive knowledge of the history and archaeology of the UK. They will also have a talent not only for the identification of archaeological material, but also for communication: we are looking for someone who can engage and enthuse the archaeological and volunteer community of Surrey, develop their interest and knowledge in the heritage of the county, and work towards the development of best practice in the discovery, recording and preservation of the material they recover and report.

As the post is funded via a grant from the Portable Antiquities Scheme based at the British Museum, the post holder will also be required to liaise with the museum’s staff to represent the scheme nationally, develop and maintain links with the other county Finds Liaison Officers across the country, and contribute the scheme’s own projects and outreach work.

To be shortlisted for interview your application and personal statement must clearly evidence the following as a minimum requirement:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject, with a demonstrable passion for the historic environment
  • an excellent knowledge of British Archaeology and archaeological artefacts
  • an ability to communicate with a wide range of archaeological practitioners
  • excellent IT skills and be confident at using Microsoft Office and GIS applications
  • a full UK driving licence
