Hours: 37 hours per week.

Salary: Equivalent to £17,582 per annum, paid on a pro rata basis

Contract: 3 months, to be completed before 31 March 2018

The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a voluntary national scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users. Its aims are to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology. Data arising from the Scheme is published at www.finds.org.uk.

A 13-week full-time internship is being offered, to provide experience in finds identification and recording to someone interested in developing their career in this area. You will be required to research a range of archaeological objects (including flint, pottery, coins, and metal artefacts), photograph them, edit these images and create records of the objects on the PAS online database. You will also be involved in training volunteers in these skills. You may also be required to deal with enquiries from members of the public and to assist at outreach events and metal detector club meetings.

With an Honours degree in archaeology or a related subject, you will have experience of identifying and working with archaeological finds. Experience of working with computer databases is desirable, as is knowledge of image manipulation programs such as Adobe Photoshop. Good communication and organisational skills are essential as is a methodical approach to your work. This post is supported by a grant from the Headley Trust - previous beneficiaries of Internships funded by the Headley Trust may not be eligible to apply.

The post will be based at the Somerset Heritage Centre, Taunton and will be managed by the Finds Liaison Officer for Somerset and Devon. The post is available for 37 hours a week for 13 weeks.
