Finds Liaison Officer, East and West Sussex
Overview
The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a national scheme led by the British Museum to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users, to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public engagement in archaeology. This data is published on www.finds.org.uk and is made available to the nearest Historic and Environmental Record.
About us
The Sussex Archaeological Society, founded in 1846, is the oldest county-based archaeological society in the UK. A registered self-funding charity whose charitable aims are to enable people to enjoy, learn about and have access to the heritage of Sussex. This is done by opening six historic sites in Sussex to visitors, providing research facilities in its library, running excavations, providing a finds identification service and offering a variety of walks, talks and conferences on the archaeology and history of Sussex the scheme is overseen by the BM in partnership with the Society. The Finds Liaison position is funded in partnership with the HLF, the Arts Council, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Sussex Archaeological Society. The post is funded in the first instance for 12 months for 4 days per week (30 hours) but the contract is likely to be extended.
The candidate
You will have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline, or considerable relevant experience, together with experience of finds identification, recording and database entry, and public outreach work in a museum or archaeology environment. You will be highly organised when working under pressure and to deadlines. A high level of PC literacy is key, in particular a sound knowledge of using databases, to allow effective recording of finds on the Schemes finds database.
It is essential that you have the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people and groups including metal detector users to explain the aims of the scheme and the Treasure Act.
