Headley Trust Internship for Finds Liaison Assistant based at Barbican House Museum, Lewes, East Sussex

The PAS (www.finds.org.uk) was set up to advance knowledge of the history and archaeology of England and Wales by recording archaeological objects found by members of the public. The Sussex Archaeological Society invites applications from individuals interested in assisting the Finds Liaison Officer as part of a Headley Trust Learning Bursary. This position will be a shared assistantship between Sussex and Hampshire Finds Liaison Officers, to be managed by the Sussex Archaeological Society on behalf of the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

The work will consist of:

  1. Documentation and recording of artefacts on the PAS online database. This includes measuring, weighing, and identifying objects as well as immediate care, i.e. sorting and repacking of finds.
  2. Taking digital images and resizing/ re-working images for upload onto the PAS database.
  3. Working with the metal detecting community and other finders on a daily basis
  4. Assisting in outreach and self-recording training within the metal detecting community and with the public at-large.

We are looking for an individual who has a working knowledge of the PAS database and finds identification as specified in the attached link. This is a part-time position over six months (until the end of April 2016) for 18 hours per week, spread over three days a week, Monday – Wednesday, paid at £8.55 per hour.

Main Purpose of the Job

The assist the Sussex and Hampshire Finds Liaison Officers in the identification and recording of finds made by members of the public throughout the regions. The main duties of the post holder will be the identification and recording of finds (which are likely to include pottery and flint as well as metal artefacts) onto the Portable Antiquities Scheme database.

Key Tasks

Approximate % of time allocation

  • To assist in the identification of finds made by detectorists and others
  • To record objects onto the online Portable Antiquities Scheme database
  • To aid in finds photography and photo-editing of finds images
  • To provide basic advice on the conservation and storage of finds
  • To assist the Finds Liaison Officers in co-ordinating and facilitating the operation of the Treasure Act (1996) within the region.
  • To help publicise and promote the work and aims of the Portable Antiquities Scheme
  • To assist the Finds Liaison Officers in managing and developing volunteer contributions to finds recorded in Sussex and Hampshire, as part of the Volunteer Self-Recording Scheme and PASt Explorers
