After the death of Pertinax, the post of Emperor was essentially auctioned off by the Praetorian Guards to the highest bidder. Didius Julianus made them lavish promises and vowed revenge if they didn’t choose him.

Meanwhile, Severus was hailed as imperator near Vienna and began marching towards Rome. Desperately, Didius made him an offer of dual reign, but Severus didn’t need Didius’ support and continued his march on Rome. He was killed on the Palatine Hill and buried in a family tomb.
