It measures 17.77x9.23x13.77mm, weighs 8.67g and is in the form of a horse's lower foot, upside down, with a human face projecting to one side. The object has an oval cross-section, 11.21x9.25mm at the join with the (missing) iron blade and 12.61x8.36mm at the end of the foot. The foot is flat and the frog is denoted by a long, triangular V-shaped groove with five circular punches around (three on one side, two on the other) representing shoe nails. At the wider end of the groove, where the foot is slightly narrower, is a pair of calkins. A groove around the outside of the foot delineates it, and it sits in such a way above the face so as to look like a flat cap, perhaps a sailor's hat. Below the back of the foot is a V-shaped groove which extends in a line upwards to the front, above the face and presumably forming a hair line. To the edge on either side is a raised triangular moulding, probably forming a high collar. A lower raised and moulded section forms a lower collar. To the underside this has a wide V-sectioned groove, apparent also on both faces. This is the slot for the missing iron tang. A narrower groove flankes the slot on one side. The face has a prominent triangular nose directly below the hairline, underneath which are two shallow transverse grooves, a transverse rib and another shallow groove. Below this is moulded, raised triangular section - possibly a beard or chin. Either side of the nose is a small punched circle for an eye. The horse's foot is a common form for end-caps (eg. HAMP-462E17; IOW-55C065; WILT-5D5D95), but an example with a human face in addition is not recorded on the PAS database. N light of this find it is likely there are some PAS examples but wear and iron staining has obscured any identifiable features. The shoulders are c.7.5mm wide below, narrowing to c.4.8mm below and further to 3.38m wide at the back of the hoop, which is D-shaped in cross section and faceted. The bezel may have represented the initial of the Christian name of the owner, but not necessarily so (see Cherry in Saunders ed. 1991, p.40). The plate has a c.2mm diameter piercing at the centre and another at the surviving end, for attachment purposes. On the reverse these piercings are sunken. To the front, the plate has foliate decoration. The surviving end is tri-lobed, the central lobe carrying the rivet hole, the outer lobes decorated as leaves. The leaves extend from a central stem which stops short just of the centre, from where six leaves radiate from the central piercing. Cf.
