<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A Post Medieval zoomorphic knife handle, made from animal skeletal material (bone or ivory), dating to the late 16th century. This knife handle tapers towards the socket for the knife; it is oval in cross&#45;section and the terminal is carved to form a three&#45;dimensional zoomorphic head, probably depicting a horse. The handle is hollowed to approximately half&#45;way along its length to accommodate the tang of the knife. Part of the socket and part of the zoomorphic terminal is broken and missing. The body of the handle is decorated with bands of 3 parallel lines. Of the zoomorphic head the neck, mouth and mane are surviving. The detail on the head is marked by carved lines, for example, one diagonal line marks the jaw and the mane is depicted by a series of transverse short lines. The head is also decorated with two ring and dot motifs on each side of the head; one on the side of the face and one on the neck.
This knife handle fits within the panoply of this kind of carving for the late 16th century. T is similar in style to LON&#45;A2DDE5 and LVPL&#45;088561 although both are anthropomorphic rather than zoomorphic.
Dimensions: length: 61.20mm; width at the widest part: 14.27mm; thickness: 7.87mm; weight: 5.94g.</full>

The bunghole is ring&#45;shaped; it contains part of the wall of the cistern and an additional attached fluted disc of the same fabric, which has then had a circular removal taken from the centre. The fabric is light grey with small to large flint and grit inclusions. It measures 52.1mm (length) x 46.9mm (width) x 22.2mm (thickness) x 17.7.mm (diameter of hole) and weighs 46.37g.
Cisterns are a common form of coarseware vessel, and are the only ones to have bungholes. The cisterns were made from c.1340 to 1440 AD (Pearce and Vince 1988, 56 &amp; 87)</full>

<full>A medieval to post medieval bone awl, made from a sheep&#39;s metacarpal. One side of the bone has been removed, allowing the awl to lie flat on the removed face and revealing the inner chamber. It has been filed and polished; one end retains the distal condyle but the other has been narrowed (from 36.4mm/ 92.0mm along the) to create a pointed tip. This tip would have been used to pierce other materials (e.g. leather). It measures 131.6mm (length) x 18.2mm (width) x 13.3mm (thickness) and weighs 11.49g.
Similar tools were used throughout the medieval to early post medieval period, and because of the lack of decoration a broad c.1100 to 1600 AD date is suggested.</full>

The terminal is in the shape of a hand which is offset from the handle&#39;s centre and narrowed; the fingers are emphasised by incised lines between. Next to the hand the full width of the handle has a double incised collar, creating a sleeve&#45;like effect. The core of the knife is an iron tang, which can be seen in the breaks on the handle. The bone has broken unevenly, showing the side of the iron tang. The knife has broken across completely before the blade starts. The knife now measures 93.3mm (length) x 12.7mm (width) x 8.0mm (thickness) and weighs 11.25g.
The shape of the handle and the through tang suggest an early post medieval date, c. 1500&#45;1550 AD.</full>

<full>An incomplete post medieval knife, missing the blade and parts of the handle. The core of the knife is an iron tang with a intergal end plate and finial knop. The other end of the surviving tang is broken. On the tang sit six ovoid bone sections which widen as they near the finial end. There is a gap between each and a copper alloy plate attached on either side facing the gaps. Each section is carved, and has eight facets. The sections are in sets of three; the bone pieces get thicker as the trio nears the finial end, then thin for the start of the next trio. The largest of each trio is decorated with a ring&#45;and&#45;dot motif on each facet. After the largest bone section is the end plate and knop. The knife now measures 67.5mm (length) x 20.4mm (width) x 12.2mm (thickness) and weighs 18.14g.
It is likely that the gaps between the bone sections would have held another organic material (e.g. wooden) section. The shape of the handle and the through tang suggest an early post medieval date, c. 1525&#45;1600 AD.</full>

<descriptions>
<description>
<full>One part of a post&#45;medieval two&#45;piece stone mould that was probably used for making lead shot. The mould probably dates to the 17th century.
The stone is cuboid and broken at one end. The mould has been designed so that it can be used to cast two different guages of shot depending on from which side the molten lead is poured. One side contains two concave circular depressions each with a narrow casting gate and a funnel&#45;shaped opening at the side of the mould. Five smaller circular depressions with siimilar channels are located below the two larger ones, with their gates opening to the opposite side. A circular pilot hole is located in one corner.
The larger circles measure circa 15mm diameter. The smaller measure circa 8mm diameter.
The stone is chalky&#45;white and has a green patina on the back.
This mould is similar to LON&#45;763F17 which was also discovered nearby on the Thames foreshore but on the opposite side.</full>

COMB</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>An incomplete medieval double&#45;sided bone or horn comb. Most of the row of thick teeth survive complete; however the majority of the thin teeth are missing. One end of the solid section is also broken. The comb is undecorated and is dark brown with patches of red and black corrosion deposits. It measures 45.5mm (length) x 52.2mm (width) x 4.4mm (thickness) and weighs 8.51g.
A similar comb is illustrated in Egan et al 1991 ( 368&#45;370, ref. 1721) and is from an early 14th century deposit. Therefore a similar but wider date range is suggested for this comb.</full>

TOKEN</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>
An early post medieval bi&#45;face token. On one face is a shield containing a four petaled flower with a pellet between each petal with an obscured legend surrounding. This side is misstruck. The other face has a four petaled flower with a pellet between each petal, again with an obscured legend around. The circumference of the token has suffered minor losses. The token measures 22.1mm (diameter) x 1.8mm (thickness) and weighs 2.19g.
Lead tokens were in use throughout the medieval and post medieval periods, however black letter inscriptions suggests that it is 16th century AD in date.
