Military style buckle probably dating from the late 4th to early 5th century AD. The object has been cast in one piece and has an integral plate and loop. The plate is rectangular and is of an openwork design. It is incomplete but originally had four vertical rectangular cells separated by moulded columns. The horizontal bottom edge of the plate is now largely missing but appears to have had decorative concave incisions. Above the rectangular cells are four horizontally aligned openwork circles and, above these, a narrow horizontal band with a lipped top edge and concave vertical edges. The D-shaped loop adjoins the horizontal upper edge of the plate. It measures 23.4mm wide by 15.5mm high deep and is undecorated apart from a single punched ring and dot at each of the two points where it joins the plate. Four further ring and dot marks adorn the upper part of the buckle plate. Three corroded iron attachments aligned horizontally near to the top edge of the buckle plate are probably the remains of a pin attachment. The reverse of the buckle is plain. A flake scraper or knife dating to the mid Acheulean period (c. -200,000 BP or earlier). The object is heavily patinated on one of its surfaces and is made of a flint of fairly coarse greyish/buff colour. It was probably made by striking a core with a hammer and the sharp edge re-touched to create the final form. The piece is only worked one one face and the shape is roughly amygdaloid. The level of abraision shows that the implement has been much rolled and is therefore re-deposited. It has also suffered slightly from modern damage. A heavy butted hand axe dating to the mid Acheulean period (c. 200,000 BP or earlier). The object is bifacially worked. It is made from a creamy/grey flint, and has a deep honey-coloured cortex. The axe has some modern damage to the point and to the butt. The intact surfaces are well rolled indicating that it was carried to its findspot, probably by fluvio-glacial drift in antiquity. The amygdaliod form is one of the most common types recovered from the gravel deposits around the Ouse and particularly the sites at Kempston and Biddenham. The artefact depicts a standing figure wearing a loose fitting robe, with several folds of cloth visible. All that remains is the upper torso and upper arms. The arms are pointed upwards and emanate from large hanging sleeves. There are traces of some sort of black paint on the lower part of the robe. A casting line can be seen, running vertically between the two halves of the figure. The inside is hollow. No parallel for this object could be found but the style of it suggests it is Christian, possibly representing Christ or a saint. A consideration of the subject matter and the technology of casting and decoration leads to the conclusion that the piece is probably post-medieval in date. The object was found in two halves and stuck together with tape by the finder. It measures 33.5mm high by 39.3mm wide and 14.2mm thick. The weight is 32.65g.
