The matrix is unusual in not having a handle cast in one with the matrix face. All that survives is a flat disc of copper alloy with the seal matrix carved on one face. The edges are corroded and worn which unfortunately makes the legend illegible apart from the initial \"S\" standing for 'Sigillum' meaning 'seal of'. The design is a motif similar to a thrift flower as seen on George VI three pence pieces, or maybe a thistle. It has a single central stem dividing into three with a circular cross hatched flower head at the end of each stem. At each side of the stem is a key. The complexity of the design suggests is unusual for a personal seal and may be a merchant's privy mark. On the reverse there is slightly different patination in the middle of the disc, perhaps suggesting that the matrix face was soldered to some form of handle. There are also two circular depressions near the middle of the disc which may be a further clue to the way it was mounted. It is a two part pendant, consisting of an outer circle of metal with two short, straight extensions to a suspension loop, which is now broken Between the two extensions is a short, transverse pin from which hangs a sexfoil shaped pendant with a central hole. This was free-swinging but is now locked by corrosion products. The petal attaching the central flower to the pin is larger than the other five. The inner edge of the outer circle is scalloped to accommodate the petals of the flower. There are traces of gilt remaining on the upper surface of the pendant; the underside is plain. It is 32.9mm long, 19mm wide, and 5.3mm thick. It weighs 5.3gm. A similar example is HAMP-CAE922 on the data base. Harness pendants are generally dated from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, with circular and openwork examples predominating the twelfth century, more varied types in the thirteenth and fourteenth century including the enamelled and heraldic types more commonly (Griffiths, 1995, \u2018The Medieval Horse and its Equipment\u2019). This pendant probably dates from the 12th century.","findofnote":"0","secwfstage":"4","updated":"2011-02-24 13:52:42","county":"WEST YORKSHIRE","knownas":null,"fourFigure":"SE2226","lat":"53.729903","lon":"-1.655893","easting":"422800","northing":"426000","i":"225548","filename":"PAS_705_harness_pendant.jpg"},{"id":"249210","old_findID":"NLM-54BC13","objecttype":"Awl","broadperiod":"NEOLITHIC","dateFrom":"-3500","dateTo":"-2100","created":"2009-03-09 17:07:13","description":"Probably a Neolithic flint multi-piecer tool.
