Perhaps around half of the brooch survives, the lower half. It tapers gradually from the break to the bow (W.: 6.7mm) to just above the expanded foot knob (W.: 4.3mm). The foot is therefore broadly trapezoidal in plan. Its upper surface is plain within the bounds of the foot knob and a double transverse ridge which marks the end of the bow, in addition to longitudinal grooved border. It is bevelled thus giving it a triangular cross-section. The foot knob has a central ridge, higher than those that flank it above and below; grooves divide the ridges. On the lower surface, the broadly triangular catch-plate survives well. Its web extends c. 27.9mm up the leg in total. The lower surface of the fold is decorated by an incised zig zag line. It is formed of a D-shaped loop with stylised moulded animal heads at the corners. Although many such pieces have zoomorphic elements, the loop tends to be more rounded (e.g. HAMP-D3AEF2), with few as angular as this example (cf. NMS-6EE657). The heads have two small, pointed ears on each angle. Down the sides is a prominent brow ridge, with a a slightly flared snout below. The field above the brow ridge is decorated with a small longitudinal groove, while the eyes are delineated with a pair of transverse grooves below the brow ridge. The rounded base of the loop continues from the snouts. From the base emerges a sub-conical integral element of oval cross-section from which the integral bolt emerges which its flattened oval terminal (7.6 by 7.1mm). The bolt, before the terminal, is circular in cross-section. The top of the loop, a cross bar, is very slightly arched, possibly as a result of use. The perforation below is broadly D-shaped. This comprises around a third of the hoop, and has been broken just after the bar begins, and just beyond a protruding moulded platform, of the 'cushion lobed' form. The hoop terminates in a broadly rectangular 'skirt' (19.2 by 17.2mm), squashed in on one side. Vestiges of the bar within the skirt suggest that it was thin, rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners. The bar has been pressed up against the side of the skirt. The loop is sub-circular in cross-section, with flattened internal surface and sides. It would have probably featured three pairs of protrusions; one of these survive. It consists of a broadly rectangular 'cushion' in the same plane as the hoop (19.0 by 14.1mm). This is set above a ridged collar, which itself is delineated by a groove above and below. On one long side the collar is expanded such that it is lentoid. The upper surface of the cushion moulding features a deep longitudinal groove. It is unlikely that anything could have been set within the groove. Beyond the moulding the hoop narrows and has been bent to one side as a result of old damage. The fragment has corroded to a variable dark-green colour with pitting all over. Similar examples of platform terrets can be seen in Macgregor 1976; the majority of these are decorated with inlaid enamel. A good parallel for form can be seen in examples 65-66 which are a pair of terrets found together in Birrens Dumfriesshire. The double pierced lug is situated behind the head as is characteristic of this type. The axis bar, chord and sprung pin are all missing. The wings are curved, up to 6.2mm wide and extend for c. 6.6mm on each side of the head, with abrasions at the tips. The broken bow has a flat semicircular cross-section, with a flat lower surface. At its end is a central ridge that extends into the lug after a step down. The bow is 10.4mm wide at the back of the head and tapers to a width of 3.9mm at the point at which it has broken. This brooch now has a dull, variable light-green patina with areas of both lighter and darker corrosion product. The mount is sub-triangular in plan, terminating at the apex in a broadly trefoilate knop. At the wider end there is a bifid knop at each corner with the edge between them rounded. The upper surface appears to be decorated with symmetrical foliate patterning in low relief around the longitudinal axis; the detail has been obscured by corrosion. On the reverse there a pair of pointed lugs bent round towards each other such that they overlap: they are situated towards the wide end. The upper prong has been truncated as a result of old damage. The mount is of a variable mid-green colour largely covered in off-white corrosion product and small patches of gilding. It has been damaged by a lateral strike such that the narrowed end is bent downwards and at an angle. In its form it is broadly comparable to an artefact illustrated in Read (2001, 35; ref. 296) which is dated to around the 17th century.
