Just over half of the disc remains, the rest having been lost in antiquity. At the middle of the flat upper surface, there is an incomplete punched ring-and-dot mark, with two concentric grooves around a central perforation. This central mark was originally surrounded by a ring of further such marks, three of which occupy the perimeter of the remaining portion of plate. The damaged hinge, located on the back of the brooch, approximately 5mm down from the top edge, consists of a single right-angled lug with circular perforation. The pin and catchplate are both missing. Dimensions: 41.1mm diameter, 1.5mm thick. Weight: 8.96g. Several similar brooches are held within the collections of the Ashmolean Museum (Macgregor and Bolick 1993: 63-67, cf. 4.43 from Brighthampton, Oxon). These brooches appear to be an insular Anglo-Saxon development, with the majority having been found south of a line connecting the Severn and the Wash, with a concentration in the Upper Thames valley, where they may have been produced. The lower part of the pommel consists of an oval-sectioned socket, with a groove extending around its base. At the top, the artefact bifurcates into a pair of hollow, sub-ovoid terminals, each of which takes the form of an outward-facing human face. Although of equal dimensions, there are variations between the two heads, which are probably designed to be male and female, respectively. On the male side, a horizontal groove has been used to indicate a straight fringe to the hair. Parallel grooves angle upwards either side of the face, adding to the impression of a short, neat hairstyle. The moulded nose is of broad, squashed appearance. Flanking the nose is a pair of irregularly incised ovals, each containing a horizontal groove, to give the impression of closed eyes. An elliptical groove is used to depict the mouth. The facial features of the other head are similar, but the hair grooves are longer and extend downwards from the top of the head, indicating longer, straight hair. The space between the back of the two heads is perforated by a sub-oval rivet hole. The heavily corroded artefact measures 42.3mm wide, 29.6mm high, 17.8mm thick and weighs 48.7g. The PAS database contains two parallels for this find: NMS-896F65, from Capel, Surrey; and SWYOR-55E321, from Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire. The North Yorkshire example has been dated, perhaps erroneously, to the Iron Age, while the Norfolk example is of suggested 14th century date, based on similarity of the decoration to a relatively common form of vessel mount (see, for example, BH-CC7C87). The mount is rectangular with two rivets at the reverse. One rivet is broken close to the base. The complete rivet is circular in secton. 2.5mm in diameter and 7mm long. The decoration is in a single panel which follows the rectangular shape of the mount. The Style I zoomorphic design suggests a crouching beast facing right with a curled tail at the far left, feet beneath and a raised pellet as an eye. The rectangular plate is 27mm long, 15.5mm wide and 2.5mm thick. This object is similar to long rectangular noseband mounts from early Anglo-Saxon bridles recorded at NCL-8C56A8, SOMDOR-305381 and IOW- B0F5D2, and HAMP-929D82.
