HARNESS PENDANT</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A complete shield&#45;shaped cast copper&#45;alloy medieval heraldic harness pendant. The object is of the &#39;heater&#39; shield shape, that is, with a flat top, and sides which curve steeply to a point. From the top edge a suspension loop protrudes centrally at ninety degrees to the pendant; it is angled forwards and slightly off centre. The pendant&#39;s upper surface features moulded heraldic decoration in the form of a lion rampant. The field is inlaid with red enamel and, although no trace survives of gilding, the red&#45;brown metal is indicative of heating for gilding. It can only therefore be described as &#39;Gules, a lion rampant&#39;. An example of this design can be found illustrated in Ashley (2002, 11; ref. 61), although it has different tinctures. This pendant features traces of off&#45;white and light&#45;green corrosion product in places. It has been bent forwards slightly at the pointed base.</full>

STIRRUP</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A damaged late early&#45;medieval cast copper&#45;alloy stirrup terminal (11th century AD). The hollow back would have enclosed one of the arms of the lower part of the stirrup (Williams 1997, 1). The recess is central with a lower supporting ledge. Within the recess are corroded traces of the iron stirrup and possible lead solder to either side. The terminal is trilobate, of a flared foot like form. The flat lower surface is broadly semicircular in cross&#45;section. At the top of the foot is a moulded transverse band. The narrowed element above has been broken as a result of old damage. In form this terminal is directly comparable with one illustrated in Williams 1997, 3; fig. 5). The metal has corroded to a red&#45;brown colour with some lighter areas of corrosion product.</full>

This coin appears to be a mule of classes 5c and d because it displays features of both types. The crown is of pellet type (not split crown with fleur de lis), and with oval eyes and pellet centres (5c). The lettering is more akin to 5d, in particular the X and lombardic &#39;R&#39;. The lettering for Canterbury &#39;ANT&#39; is also ligated on the reverse.</full>

<descriptions>
<description>
<full>An incomplete and corroded cast copper&#45;alloy post medieval double&#45;looped buckle frame with asymmetrical openwork decoration (c.1620&#45;1690 AD). The frame was formed of a pair of sub&#45;rectangular loops which have broken at the pin bar. At the outer edge of the loop is a wedge&#45;shaped bifid knop, from which detailed foliate openwork extends horizontally in an open spiral shape, and which inclines inwardly to the corners of the the square buckle opening. This is mirrored by a similar spiral extending from the pin bar to join likewise at the corner. The upper surface of the frame is bevelled steeply internally through the openwork, but more gently at the exterior edges. The underside of the frame is flat, and possible traces of tinning remain. This artefact has corroded to a dark&#45;green colour, with areas of underlying red/brown visible on the pin bar and at the exterior edges. A near identical parallel can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 80 no.497), dated to c. 1620&#45;1690 AD.</full>

<full>A slightly worn and corroded 2nd century Roman copper&#45;alloy As or Dupondius of uncertain Antonine emperor (c. 138&#45;180 AD, Reece period 7&#45;8). Mint is Rome. Both legends are missing. It is unclear if the obverse depicts a bare or laureate head; the reverse probably depicts Mars, standing front facing left with cloak over left shoulder, holding spear left and possibly another attribute right. However, due to severe surface wear on the coin, it is possible that this is actually a depiction of Mercury standing front, head left, holding patera and caduceus (Cf. RIC III, p237, No. 309). Because the legends are missing, it is impossible to identify this coin further.</full>

<description>
<full>A complete but misshapen probable hammered copper&#45;alloy closed thimble of Medieval to Post Medieval date (c.1400&#45;1600 AD). The thimble has a domed crown from which the body tapers gently, terminating in a broad undecorated band at the rim. At the apex of the crown the thimble is tonsured, displaying a plain, undecorated area. From this tonsured area the indentations of the thimble follow a spiral pattern around the circumference of the body. This artefact has been compressed from one side, which has resulted in two small cracks at the rim, and so that the opening at the rim is broadly heart&#45;shaped, as a likely result of post&#45;depositional damage. It has an overall dark red&#45;brown colour. The thimble measures 15.7 mm high, with a 15.5 mm diameter base, 0.6 mm thick walls, and weighs 1.88 grams.</full>

<full> A Scottish Medieval silver Short Cross and Stars cut halfpenny of William I (1165&#45;1214 AD). Short Cross, Phase B issue, dating to late reign of William I and posthumous issue, c. 1205(?)&#45;c. 1230. The remains of the obverse depict the back of William I&#39;s hair, bust facing left; the legend reads: LE REI W[ILAM]. The reverse is of the Short Cross and Stars type; the reverse legend reads: W[ALTER]. This issue does not indicate the mint on the coin, however because of the placement of the &#39;W&#39; the moneyer Walter is likely to be Hue Walter, suggesting the Edinburgh and Perth moneyers working together jointly (Spink 2003, p14). Cf. Spink 2003 (2nd ed), &#39;Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands&#39;, No. 5029.</full>

<description>
<full>A Medieval silver short cross cut halfpenny dating to later reign of John (1199&#45;1216) or the early part Henry III&#39;s reign (1216&#45;1272), North Class 6 dating to c. 1209&#45;1217. Moneyer is probably Walter and mint is likely to be either London or Canterbury. The obverse has traces of two circular curls with pellets in each one and remains of the hair from the bust&#39;s beard. The obverse legend reads: [he]NRICVS [REX]. The reverse depicts a voided short cross with quattrefoil in the two remaining quadrants. The reverse legend is misspelled reading: [WL]ATER.ON [...]. Similar spelling errors on coins struck by Walter have been discussed elsewhere on the PAS database: cf. HAMP&#45;5CDBA3 for further discussion. It is possible that this coin could be further identified as Wren Class 6b2, but this distinction is not possible with North Class Types. Cf. North 1994 Vol I, Nos. 974&#45;976. </full>

<descriptions>
<description>
<full> An extremely worn and broken Continental copy of a Medieval silver long cross penny. Initial mark: cross pattee. The style of the coin suggests a date from the mid&#45;14th to 15th century AD. Traces of a flower on the right side of the crown on the obverse confirm Continental origins for this coin. The remains of the obverse legend reads: +: ID[...] [...] [...]IE (saltire stops). The reverse depicts a long cross penny with three pellets in each quadrant; the remains of the legend reads: [CIV]I&#45;T[AS] [...]. Approximately half of the coin is missing due to stress along the centre line of the coin.
Because of the combination of stops and obverse legend it is possible that this coin is imitating a Post Treaty penny of Edward III (1351&#45;1361 AD); cf. North 1991 Vol 2, p48&#45;49; Wren 1995, p8</full>

BUCKLE</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A complete cast copper&#45;alloy Late Roman buckle, c. 4th&#45;c. 5th century AD. Hawkes and Dunning Type IIIB. The buckle consists of a D&#45;shaped buckle loop with a trapezoidal intregrally&#45;cast plate on the outer face, a small plate on the reverse, two rivets and a pin, all of which are made of copper alloy. The D&#45;shaped buckle loop has bevelled outer and inner edges and has incised decoration of two stylised dolphin heads from the side profile, with an eye, jaws and v&#45;shaped delineation between head and body for each; a further line runs from top to the bottom of the jaws. The reverse surface of the buckle loop has been filed to smooth and flatten the surface but no further decoration is visible. The integrally&#45;cast buckle plate has two parts: the first is trapezoidal in shape and has elaborate incised decoration on the outer surface and a circular hole for the pin, through which the pin is wrapped; the second part consists of a small narrow sub&#45;rectangular plate on the reverse, which is undecorated and would have been used to create the necessary tension to fix a leather belt strap to the buckle. Both plates are fixed together by means of two circular copper alloy rivets near the outer edges of the buckle plate. The decoration of the buckle plate matches that of the loop in that it consists of incised and stamped decoration. Two incised lines with internal vertical hashing follow the three outer perimeter edges; inside of this decoration, half circles of a stamped ring&#45;and&#45;dot design follow two each on the shorter edges and four on the largest outer edge. In contrast to the effort used to create the buckle and plate, the pin is relatively rudimentary and created from a copper alloy sheet and simply wrapped around the pin hole. It is possible that this pin was added later when the original pin had broken and it seems that the alloy composition used was different from the rest of the buckle. The buckle and frame components all have an even dark green patina, but the rivets are of a slightly different green colour and the pin has differential corrosion on the surface and no real patina. It is in excellent condition with only slight surface damage on the outer surface and all components intact.
The buckle measures a total of 27.55 mm long; with a maximum width of 30.81 mm at the buckle loop and 23.89 mm wide at the buckle plate end and maximum thickness of 3.41 at the buckle plate end; the reverse buckle plate measures 21.85 mm long by 6.12 mm wide and 0.62 mm thick; the pin measures 16.66 mm long. The buckle weighs 6.91 grams. Cf. Hawkes, S C and Dunning G, 1961. &#39;Soldiers and Settlers in Britain, 4th&#45;5th Century&#39;, Medieval Archaeology 5, 1&#45;70, esp. Fig. 20. </full>
