A square suspension loop is located at the top between these two sound holes. The lower hemisphere contains two holes joined by a channel forming a sound slot. To one side of this sound slot there were probably the initials of the maker but the bell is too worn for these to be deciphered, on the other side of the slot is the symbol of a hammer. A grooved circle, formed of two semi-circles to either side of the sound slot, encircles the hammer and and worn initials. The sound pea is still present inside the bell. On at least one of these faces this design appears to consist of pseudo-lettering and a quatrefoil of four pellets. The other face is too worn to decipher. Whorls which such lettering are thought to date predominantly to the 1600s. (Dimensions: diameter 26mm, 9.8mm thick, perforation 9.1mm across, 30.96g weight) The second whorl is unusual in form and may indeed not be a true whorl but a weight for some other purpose. The whorl is cylindrical in shape with an uneven serrated, or undulating, outer edge and a central circular perforation. Both faces of the whorl are near flat and have incised decoration consisting of criss-crossed lines forming stars and cross formations on one face and a more irregular pattern on the opposing face, which mimics ogham script although the whorl is thought to be too late for this to be the case. The wings, bow and most of the catch-plate survive. The wings are cylindrical in section and hollow for taking axis bar, which is still in situ. The wings are open at the centre and where the hinged pin would have rotated, a small stub of the pin appears to survive but the brooch is corroded in this area. The wings have moulded decoration consisting of alternating grooves and ridges running vertically around the wings to either side of the bow in a symmetrical pattern. The rear of the wings is, however, plain. The head of the bow, which is semi-circular in section, is slightly swollen where it meets the top of the bow and then tapers towards the foot. The bow is decorated with further moulded decoration consisting of two raised arcs where it abuts the wings and between these a single raised ridge running down the midline of the bow. To either side of the midline there are two other less prominent ridges, each with a groove between. all 5 of this ridges taper and converge towards the foot. The foot of the bow narrows and then finishes with a slightly flared moulded knop decorated with two transverse ridges with a groove between. Most of the triangular catchplate remains but it is broken and worn. This brooch has been dated in line with Dolphin and T-Shaped brooches AD c.50-150. The loops each have 6 concave moulded recesses for taking gemstones, with two still in situ and one loose. The reverse of the buckle is flat and plain. The pin is missing. A similar buckle, although without any stones in situ, can be seen in 'Buckles - 1250-1800', Ross Whitehead, p.71, number 446 and this buckle has been dated in line with this as c.1600-1720. The lower hemisphere, which is decorated with a 'sunburst' design, has the initials R and W to either side of the sound slit. The initials RW indicate that the bell was manufactured at the Aldbourne (Wiltshire) foundry under the Wells family, the initials refer to Robert Wells. The bell will have been manufactured between 1755-1825 at which point the foundry went bankrupt. The upper hemisphere of the bell, wich is plain in decoration, has two circular sound holes to either side of a semi-circular suspension loop with semi-circular opening for suspension. There is a further horseshoe shaped hole at the point where one of the sides of the suspension loop meets the bell. Attached to the suspension loop are two chain links, the first of these is circular and unwelded and the second is a rounded triangle welded closed. Bells of this type were used in groups for the decoration of horse harness and other draught animal gear. The dating for this bell is 1755-1825.
