An incomplete cast copper alloy (bronze) palstave of Middle Bronze Age dating (c.1500 to c. 1150 BC). The palstave has a shield shaped pattern below the stop ridge, and raised flange facets. The blade of the palstave is sub-triangular in plan, with convex expanding sides, and a convex cutting edge. The cutting edge measures 1.57mm thick. In profile the blade is sub-triangular with the widest section being before the stop ridge. The blade (measured from the cutting edge to the stop ridge) is 93.38mm in length. The width of the cutting edge is 62.56mm. The thickness of the blade is 18.00mm (measured at a point below the stop ridge; the width at this point is 27.46mm). Beneath the stop-ridge, on both sides of the palstave, is a concave depression, which is bordered by raised ridges. This is broadly sub-rectangular (U-shaped) and is probably an area of decoration, usually described as shield shaped.<\/p>\n
The rear part of the axe (from the stop ridge to the butt) is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in section (profile), with the widest part behind the stop ridge. At the stop ridge, the palstave measures 28.94mm thick and 27.38mm wide. The septum (the area between the flange facets and the stop ridge) is 62.63mm long, 17.87mm wide and 6.00mm deep. The butt of the axe has been damaged and is incomplete.<\/p>\n
The palstave is a mid brown to mid green colour. The surface is pitted and corroded with a light greenish brown patina remaining only on the septum.<\/p>\n
Similar examples to this palstave can be seen in: Savory, 1980; Catalogue of the Bronze Age collections in the National Museum of Wales; Fig 19-21 specifically example 144 from Llanguirig, Montgomeryshire (Powys). A rectangular strip of lead that has carefully and deliberately been folded in half. The object may be a piece of casting waste or possibly functioned as a weight or a curse tablet. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It has been folded once lengthways. Curse tablets tend to be folded more than once, and often look more crude than this example. Cast lead button dating to the late Medieval period. The object is sub-circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. The button is decorated with six raised radiating ribs between each of which is a pellet. There is a projecting rib on the reverse which is not central, and extending from that is the broken remains of an attachment loop. Similar examples can be seen on page 17 of Buttons and Fasteners by Gordon Bailey (2004). Copper alloy spur buckle dating to the Medieval period. The object is a single loop oval buckle with an integral plate which would have ended with a hook. The plate is rectangular in cross-section and curved in profile. The pin remains attached to the strap bar and is complete. The object has a single rivet hole for attachment. It terminates with a break. The object has a light green patina and the remains of gilding can be seen on the outer face. Similar examples can be seen on p32-33, Whitehead, (2003).
