However, as this jetton is unusual, a more general date range of 1350-1450 is suggested here until further research confirms this association.<\/p>\n<p>The obverse bears a heater-shield of Burgundy-modern and Burgundy-ancient (the bands in the top right quarter being incorrectly aligned) and has the legend 'AVE MARIA [GRA]CIA [M A]'. The reverse bears a triple-stranded straight cross fleuretty within a tressure of four arches. Within the inner angles are the letters 'A\/M\/A\/M', within each of the four external angles is an annulet flanked by two pellets. The jetton has a dished flan measuring 27.49mm in diameter, 1.32mm thick and weighing 3.37g. Across the centre is a soldier's number 5185 (in mirror image) and around this his name and regiment, W.FRENCH around the top half and 37 REGT around the bottom half.  Both halves of the encircling inscription are the same way up and both are again in mirror image and in upstanding relief. The face of the seal bears the remains of  what appears to be black ink within its hollows, and the object is presumably a soldier's personal seal or stamp for  identifying his belongings.
