The corner of the tile has two-colour decoration, with the white clay slip applied with a 'slip-on-impression' technique (approximately 1mm deep). The surviving decoration forms a white cross with expanded terminals, probably forming a grid with cusped quatrefoil openings set squarely against a black background. A white swirl in the corner of the tile is likely to be the result of applying the cross decoration and not deliberate. The surface is even and flat. A green glaze survives on the rear and side of the tile but does not survive on the front surface. The rear of the tile is plain and sanded. The pink-red fabric is oxidised and contains quartz grits. The pattern can be paralleled with examples occurring at Carmarthen Priory and Neath Abbey (Lewis, 1999, p 33, Nos. 129 and 197) . The Carmarthen and Neath Abbey Tiles belong to Lewis' (ibid) Group 16, which he dates to the 14th century. St Margret's chapel has recorded tiles with differing designs listed as Group 16. Group 16 tiles have a distribution in South Wales between Whitland (Carmarthenshire) in the west and Margam (Neath Port Talbot) in the east. The butt is moderately rounded and thin (with a width of 38.4mm and a thickness of 3mm). The sides are concave, narrowing to a point near the butt (with a width of 36.1mm and 35mm from the butt), before gradually diverging to approximately the midpoint and diverging sharply to the blade. The sides have been carefully hammered to produce a bevel and a central ridge. The blade is moderately curved and is unexpanded at the tips (producing a blade width of 82.3mm). There is no evidence of flanges on the edges of the face but the axe has a lozenge-shaped long section, indicating it to be of 'Developed' form. The median bevel occurs at the midpoint of the axe (approximately 77mm from the butt, where the axe has a maximum thickness of 13.5mm and a width of 41.1mm). The axe faces are convex across their widths at the blade and butt and are near-flat at the mid-section. A gentle blade facet is discernible on both faces (occurring around 11mm from the blade edge). There is no evidence of applied decoration on the axe and no definite sharpening striations at the blade. The surface is heavily-pitted with a pale-green corrosion; patches of the original surface survive with a silvery, dark-green patina. Aylseford axes are typologically the most primitive and therefore the earliest of the Developed axe types (Schmidt & Burgess, 1981, p 60) . This find represents the thirteenth known example of a recorded Aylesford type axe from Wales, with a general distribution centred on Glamorganshire and eastern Gwent for the seven examples from South Wales. The form of the buckle is D-shaped with the ends of the frame enhanced with beast's heads protruding to the rear. The beats are depicted with large raised circular eyes on the sides, below a moulded undulating brow. The bar is of rounded D-shaped section (with a width and thickness of 5 -6mm) and is convex across its length. The frame is of sub triangular section (4mm thick) and is bevelled towards the outside edge. The frame is narrowest near the bar (at 12.8mm) and gradually widens to the midpoint (where it has a width of 20.8mm). The midpoint of the frame has a prominent sub-triangular raised moulding containing a central recess to accommodate the missing pin. The frame is decorated with a panel each side of the central notch, contained within an incised border. The heavy surface corrosion has largely obscured the design, which may have depicted incised interlaced beasts. The surface of the buckle is heavily corroded with a pale green corrosion product overlying areas of red-brown metal. The buckle has proved difficult to closely parallel and may be seen as unusual. The zoomorphic attributes suggest an Early Medieval date, possibly of a devolved Late Saxon style. The weight corresponds closely to one ounce weights of the Mercantile systems and the Tower system (all 29.2g) current in the medieval period but is also consistent with a modern ounce. The 'XOX' is more likely to refer to twenty pennyweight (31.10g) and the slight weight difference may result from corrosion of the weight.
