Doge Barbarigo’s reign was troubled by wars with Charles VIII of France and the Ottoman sultan Bayezid II. Despite the troubles abroad, Barbarigo initiated an extensive programme of public building including many of the monuments we now see around St Marks Square. A statue of the kneeling doge was once located on top of the facade of the clock tower in St Marks Square; however it was destroyed by the French in 1797 as a symbolic act to mark the end of the republic. The tomb of Agostin Barbarigo was originally in the church of Santa Maria della Carita before being dismantled in 1808.
