Mocenigo’s reign began as the war with the Turks was drawing to a close. Though peace was on the horizon, it came with a heavy price for the Republic who was forced to give up a number of forts to the Turks. Furthermore the Venetian Senate had to pay the Turks taxes to allow them to trade within the Turkish Empire. Shortly after the end of the war a great plague devastated the region; the doge fell ill but recovered. In 1485 he contracted the plague a second time, from which he did not recover. Giovanni Mocenigo is buried in the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
