A 3 month full-time internship is being offered, funded by the Headley Trust, to provide experience in finds identification and recording. You will be required to research a range of archaeological objects (including flint, pottery, coins, and metal artefacts), photograph them, edit these images and create records of the objects on the PAS online database. You will also be required to deal with enquiries from members of the public and to assist at outreach events such as metal detecting clubs and rallies. As such, a flexible approach will be needed as outreach events usually take place over evenings and weekends.

We are looking for someone with a good understanding of British Archaeology who is interested in a career in small finds. Good communication and organisational skills are essential as is a methodical approach to your work. Experience of working with computer databases and digital photography is desirable, however training will be provided in use of the PAS database and photography. There will be on the job training in finds identification throughout the course of the internship.

The post will be managed jointly by the Finds Liaison Officers from Essex and Cambridgeshire. The intern will be predominantly based at the Museum Resource Centre, Colchester, but you will be expected to work part of the internship in Cambridge. The successful applicant will be required to carry out work from each region.

The internship will run from July to September 2012 with a maximum of £4600 funding available to cover salary and travel expenses made in agreement with the Finds Liaison Officers. The internship will be on a self employed basis and no employment rights will accrue with Colchester Borough Council.
