Applications are invited for an Institute of Archaeologists/Heritage Lottery Funded placement in Artefact Identification, Research and Recording, hosted by the Sussex Archaeological Society in conjunction with the Portable Antiquities Scheme. The Sussex Archaeological Society is a charitable body which aims to promote the study and enjoyment of archaeology and history in the counties of East and West Sussex. The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a national scheme which aims to record archaeological finds made by members of the public and increase understanding amongst all audiences of the importance of finds and how they should be dealt with.

The successful applicant will learn how to identify and record archaeological finds from all periods, with a focus on small finds and metal work. The primary focus will be on identifying and recording archaeological finds by members of the public. They will be expected to get involved with all aspects of the Portable Antiquities Schemes work including public outreach and dissemination. A secondary focus will be on researching and writing up a group of small finds to publication standards.

Applicants must have a degree or equivalent experience in British Archaeology and an interest in becoming an artefact specialist.
