The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users, to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology.

Somerset and Dorset County Councils work in partnership to run this scheme across both counties. The postholder will work closely with the Senior Finds Liaison Officer who is based at Dorchester, Dorset.
The successful candidate will have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline, or considerable relevant experience and specialist knowledge of finds recording. You must have a flexible approach and be willing to work outside normal office hours eg to attend meetings.

As Finds Liaison Officer you will make contact with members of the public such as metal-detector users, explain the aims of the Scheme and the Treasure Act to the public and heritage professionals and identify, research and record finds on the Portable Antiquities Scheme's database.

The job involves travelling to locations inaccessible by public transport.
