Applications are invited for an HLF funded IFA Workplace Learning Bursary with the Archaeology department at the University of Reading. The post represents an excellent opportunity to gain skills in archaeological illustration and graphics within a leading University department. The successful candidate will receive training from, and work under the supervision of, Margaret Mathews, the department's Graphics technician. Professor Grenville Astill (Head of Department) will act as mentor and Emma O'Riordan (former bursary holder) will provide additional support. The post will be based in the Archaeology Department on Reading's Whiteknights campus.

The successful candidate will attend the Masters module in graphics taught in the department, receiving training in core archaeological illustration techniques and Adobe graphics software. These skills will be developed through a programme of work preparing publication illustrations for a variety of ongoing department research projects. He/She will also have opportunities to acquire further relevant graphics skills and work experience through partnership placements elsewhere in the University. He/She will develop a portfolio of work for professional development and will be encouraged to work towards full membership of the Association of Archaeological Illustrators & Surveyors. There may also be an opportunity to use the experience gained in this placement towards a vocational qualification in archaeological practice.

We welcome applications from candidates with archaeological training to degree level (or equivalent experience), with a strong interest in pursuing a career in archaeological illustration and graphics. Candidates should have some IT skills and archaeological experience. A demonstrable interest in art or graphics is desirable but previous experience of computer graphics is not essential as training will be given.
