Person Specification
Essential:
- Good degree in archaeology or a related discipline, or considerable relevant experience.
- Experience of artefact identification or previous experience of working within an archaeological organisation with an emphasis on finds recording and processing.
- Awareness of issues relating to metal-detecting and archaeology
- Ability to work in a highly-organised fashion, under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Ability to work alone.
- Ability to collect systematically and to collate large amounts of information and data, and to produce quarterly reports, an annual report, and other documentation to a high standard of numeracy, accuracy and clarity.
- A flexible approach to working and some evening work at metal-detector clubs and other relevant societies and organisations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including finders, archaeologists, landowners, the general public and the media.
- Clean driving licence and own transport.
Desirable:
- Previous research into and /or publication of archaeological finds.
- Knowledge of the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
- Previous experience of computerised databases.
- Previous experience of working with metal-detectorists or similar groups.
- Previous experience of working with volunteers

Terms and Conditions of Employment
- The post is full time and is offered on a fixed term contract to 31st March 2008, with the possibility of extension for a further period dependent on availability of funding for the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
- Salary within the range £18,500 - £20,250 per annum dependent on age and experience, pro rata.
- Working pattern - Monday to Friday 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. with a 5.00 p.m. finish on Fridays. 37 hour week with 1 hour lunch break, unpaid.
- There will be a requirement to attend some evening meetings or weekend activities. Where additional hours are worked, time off in lieu (TOIL) may be taken at a mutually convenient time.
- Holiday entitlement pro rata to 22 days per annum and 8.5 bank / public holidays.
- Pensionable post after 3 months of employment. Two month probationary period during which time notice requirement from either party is 1 week . Thereafter, notice requirement 2 months.
- Post holder will report to Research Officer and the post will be based at Lewes, county town of East Sussex.
- Post holder must be willing to make contributions to Society publications including the Newsletter (published 3 times per annum) and the website.
- Post subject to enhanced disclosure with Criminal Records Bureau.
Business mileage reimbursed at 40p / mile.
