Applications are invited for a 12 month, HLF funded IFA Workplace Learning Bursary in Rural Archaeology with North Yorkshire County Council. This is an excellent opportunity to receive training in archaeological management methods under the supervision of Linda Smith, Rural Archaeologist and other members of the Heritage and Environment Section. Gail Falkingham, Historic Environment Team Leader, will act as line manager, and Bob Sydes, Heritage and Environment Section Manager, as mentor, to provide additional support and encouragement throughout the placement. The post will be based at County Hall in Northallerton, but there will be some travel around the county, potentially to rural areas not served by public transport.

The successful candidate will receive professional training to develop a wide understanding of rural archaeology. They will gain practical experience and learn about the variety of landscapes in North Yorkshire and how to recognise the most frequently encountered archaeological features in the field. They will learn how to communicate this information and undertake negotiations in responding to Farm Environment Plan consultations. The role of local authorities in rural delivery and partnership working will be understood and there will be opportunities to receive additional training on short placements within the region with Natural England, English Heritage and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. There may also be an opportunity to use the experience gained in this placement towards a vocational Qualification in Archaeological Practice.

We welcome applicants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to the rural historic environment, who have a good knowledge of British archaeology, and a relevant qualification or equivalent experience.
