Salary: £ 19,621 - 22,221

Fixed term contract until March 2015

The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users, to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology. This data is published on www.finds.org.uk and is made available to the relevant Historic Environment Records. This position is funded in partnership with the British Museum, Department for Culture, Media and Sport and a consortium of Wiltshire Museums and Wiltshire Council led by Salisbury Museum.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in archaeology or a related discipline, or considerable relevant experience, together with experience of finds identification, recording and database entry, and public outreach work in a museum or archaeology environment. The post holder will be highly organised when working under pressure and to deadlines. A high level of PC literacy is key, in particular a sound knowledge of using databases, to allow effective recoding of finds on the Scheme's finds database. It is essential that the post holder has the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people and groups, including metal-detector users, to explain the aims of the Scheme and the Treasure Act.

The post will be based at Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. To download a job application please go to www.salisburymuseum.org.uk or telephone Salisbury Museum on 01722 332151

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Adrian Green, Museum Director on 01722 820542 or e-mail adriangreen@salisburymuseum.org.uk
