The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users, to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology. This data is published on http://www.finds.org.uk and is made available to the relevant Historic and Environmental Record. This position is funded in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Museums Libraries and Archives Council, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Somerset and Dorset County Councils.
The postholder will work closely with the Senior Finds Liaison Officer, Senior Archaeologist (Dorset County Council), Head of Museum Services (Somerset County Council) and the Head and Deputy Head of Portable Antiquities.
The successful candidate will have 2 years experience in a relevant professional specialism with an honours degree (or equivalent, with extensive work experience). You will:
- make contact with members of the public including metal-detector users;
- attend club meetings;
- explain the aims of the Scheme and the Treasure Act through giving talks;
- and record finds on the Scheme's database.
