<eventTitle>Archaeological Finds Day - Chesterfield Museum (Derbyshire)</eventTitle>
<eventLocation>Chesterfield Museum</eventLocation>
<eventDescription>Finds Day: Drop-in event for finders of archaeological objects, especially metal detector users. Please bring in any items you have found, which you believe may be older than 300 years old, for identification and possible recording by the Finds Liaison Officer who will be visiting the Museum for the day. The FLO will also be bringing along a handling collection of some typical finds so even if you haven't found anything but want to find out more about the work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme do come along.

Please note that it is helpful if hard-fired pottery & stone finds are washed before being brought in but that caution should be exercised in cleaning any metal or unfired (unhardened) pottery as this can damage the artefacts. Please see the guidance notes on conservation for more advice: www.finds.org.uk.</eventDescription>

<eventDescription>Drop-in event for finders of archaeological objects, especially metal detector users. Please bring in any items you have found, which you believe may be older than 300 years old, for identification and possible recording by the Finds Liaison Officer who will be hosting the session. The FLO will also be bringing along a handling collection of some typical finds so even if you haven't found anything but want to find out more about the work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme please come along.

Please note that it is helpful if hard-fired pottery & stone finds are washed before being brought in but that caution should be exercised in cleaning any metal or unfired (unhardened) pottery as this can damage the artefacts. Please see the guidance notes on conservation for more advice.</eventDescription>

<eventTitle>Objects and Landscape: understanding the medieval period through finds recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme</eventTitle>
<eventLocation>British Museum</eventLocation>
<eventDescription>Portable Antiquities Scheme and Medieval Settlement Research Group Conference

Stevenson Lecture Theatre, British Museum

This conference aims to highlight how PAS data have been used to advance knowledge of material culture, and outline the research potential of these data for understanding the medieval landscape.

In contrast to researchers interested in the Roman and Early Medieval periods (in particular) medievalists have not made as much use of PAS data as they might. Although papers presented at this conference will highlight advances in the studies of dress accessories, papal bullae, pilgrim’s signs etc., and their distribution, it is apparent that many other artefact types desperately warrant similar academic treatment. Less understood is any sense of the relevance of these artefacts for interpreting the medieval landscape, and it is this which will be considered in the second part of the conference.

Speakers include: Laura Burnett, Anni Byard, Teresa Gilmore, Dr Letty ten Harkel, Richard Kelleher, Dr Kevin Leahy, Dr Michael Lewis, Martin Locker, Dr Tim Pestell, Dr Andrew Rogerson, Dr Eleanor Standley and David Williams.

To book a place please send a cheque for £10 payable to ‘The British Museum’ to Claire Costin,

Department of Portable Antiquities & Treasure, British Museum, London, WC1B 3DG.</eventDescription>

<eventTitle>Archaeological Finds Day - Buxton Museum (Derbyshire)</eventTitle>
<eventLocation>Buxton Museum, Derbyshire</eventLocation>
<eventDescription>Drop-in event for finders of archaeological objects, especially metal detector users. Please bring in any items you have found, which you believe may be older than 300 years old, for identification and possible recording by the Finds Liaison Officer who will be visiting the Museum for the day.
