This is done partly on art-historical grounds and the border between the early and middle periods may change when the English Heritage radio-carbon dating project for c. 570-c. 720 is published.

In general, objects can be dated more closely than this. Most early Anglo-Saxon object types will be quoted as mid fifth to mid sixth century (450-550), or late fifth or sixth century (475-600).Thereafter, dates tend to be quoted in centuries.

There are overlaps at either end of the period when an object may be culturally Roman or early-medieval (in the fifth century) or an object may be culturally Viking-period or medieval (in the eleventh century).

</notes><parent>0</parent><broadterm></broadterm><type>1</type><fromdate>410</fromdate><todate>1066</todate><old_sortorder>110</old_sortorder><sortorder>41</sortorder><timestamp>2011-02-25 11:37:22</timestamp><preferred>1</preferred><valid>1</valid><created></created><createdBy>56</createdBy>
<updatedBy>19</updatedBy></period><period>
<term>BYZANTINE</term><notes>
Forthcoming
</notes><parent>0</parent><broadterm>67</broadterm><type>1</type><fromdate>498</fromdate><todate>1453</todate><old_sortorder>0</old_sortorder><sortorder>0</sortorder><timestamp>2010-03-22 02:39:15</timestamp><preferred>1</preferred><valid>1</valid><created></created><createdBy>56</createdBy>
<updatedBy>56</updatedBy></period><period>
<term>MEDIEVAL</term><notes>
‘Early medieval’ (soon after the Norman Conquest) can be hard to distinguish from ‘early-medieval’ (before the Norman Conquest). The term ‘middle medieval’ is not used. There is debate as to what constitutes the late medieval period. So it is best to stick simply to ‘medieval’ and qualify it using calendar dates.
</notes><parent>0</parent><broadterm></broadterm><type>1</type><fromdate>1066</fromdate><todate>1499</todate><old_sortorder>115</old_sortorder><sortorder>48</sortorder><timestamp>2011-02-25 11:38:57</timestamp><preferred>1</preferred><valid>1</valid><created></created><createdBy>56</createdBy>
<updatedBy>19</updatedBy></period><period>
<term>POST MEDIEVAL</term><notes>
Early post-medieval is generally used for the 16th century and sometimes for the 17th century. The term 'middle post-medieval’ is not used, and there is debate as to what constitutes the late post-medieval period. For the 18th century, it is best to stick simply to ‘post-medieval’ and qualify it using calendar dates.
</notes><parent>0</parent><broadterm></broadterm><type>1</type><fromdate>1500</fromdate><todate>1900</todate><old_sortorder>120</old_sortorder><sortorder>57</sortorder><timestamp>2011-02-25 11:31:27</timestamp><preferred>1</preferred><valid>1</valid><created></created><createdBy>56</createdBy>
<updatedBy>19</updatedBy></period><period>
<term>MODERN</term><notes>
There is debate as to the relationship between ‘post-medieval’ and ‘modern’.
</notes><parent>0</parent><broadterm></broadterm><type>1</type><fromdate>1901</fromdate><todate>2050</todate><old_sortorder>125</old_sortorder><sortorder>62</sortorder><timestamp>2011-02-25 11:33:01</timestamp><preferred>1</preferred><valid>1</valid><created></created><createdBy>56</createdBy>
<updatedBy>19</updatedBy></period></periods></response>
