A cast copper alloy trade weight. The weight has been marked with three stamped identification markings. 1) A ewer, which represents the fact that the weight has been approved. 2) A quartered shield of the Guildhall. 3) An unidentifiable mark. If the ewer is positioned at 6 O’clock then the shield is at 11 o’clock. With the unidentified mark at 2 o’clock. This weight was issued after 1826. In 1826 an Act came in establishing the new ‘Imperial Standards’. The weight is flat, with a raised rim. The inner (stamped) part of weight has finely turned. The reverse in fl…

A large lead weight. The weight is circular and has been formed by two plates of doomed lead, being pressed together. One of the plates is larger than the other and clamps around the other. A rectangular slot runs through the centre of the object. It is possible that it is a lead bag seal, but some discussion has been had suggesting that it might be a weight from a clock.

Probable brass pan weight, 14mm in diameter, 3mm thick and weighing 2.94g (45.3 grains, 0.104oz). It is uniface and slightly chipped. The obverse is impressed with crowned A and a ewer or coffee pot, mark of the London Founder's Company with verified weights. Dates to the reign of Anne, 1702-14. This is probably a weight for one eigth oz (0.125oz) which has lost some fabric through wear and damage.

A large dome shaped lead weight, with a circular base. There is an iron rivet in the base of the weight, it now only survives as a corroded strain of iron. The weight is unperforated. The weight is undecorated but the weight has a very rough surface, suggesting that it has been crudely made and it has been damaged by the plough. A typology of lead weights has not yet been developed, so these weighs are not yet completely understood. Due to a lack of excavated examples these weights must remain undated. The weight appears to be complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour. We…

Lead trade weight with the figure '1' imprinted on the obverse, probably indicating the weight. Since it was made from lead and does not show any 'offical markings' like a crown or the coat of arms of London, it is probably weight used by a trader or farmer (?). One could imagine that it was part of a set of several weights, the others weighing 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 2/1 etc. Like the more common brass or cu-alloy alloy weights of this type, they could have been stored in a stack, a smaller weight fitting into the rim of the next heavier one.

Several lead-alloy weights of different sizes and shapes (see attached picture). They were all found in the same corner of a field, but did not form part of a hoard. They almost certainly date from different periods from Late Roman to the Medieval Ages, were home-made and may have been used as spindle whorls, net sinkers, gaming pieces weights for traps or as part of weighing equipment. It is difficult to attribute an exact date to the individual weights. Many thanks to the finders for supplying the attached picture.

A large cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval date. The weight has a circular rim, 5.5mm thick, a central punched hole and a concentric incised circle between the two. The reverse features a number of circular grooves. The upper face is stamped with a 'C' surmounted by a crude crown, the sword of St Paul (for the City of London), and an 'A' (for avoirdupois) clustered around 12 o'clock. At 6 o'clock is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights). The 'C' denotes either Charles I or Charles II; Read (1995, 158) notes that in the reign of Charles II the 'A…
