An incomplete copper alloy unidentified object with inlaid enamel and millefiori panels, probably dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43-250. It is square in plan and rectangular in section. An outer border encloses the enamel which is made up of a 4x5 pattern of millefiori squares of chequered red and yellow enamel, with blue enamel enclosing each square. The centre of the millifiori panel is heavily damaged with the central squares missing entirely. The reverse of the object is flat and undecorated. In the centre of the reverse there is a single square slot (c.4x4m…

An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date and function. The object is square with rounded knops to each pointed terminal. The upper surface is decorated with a quatrefoil of ovate enamelled cells radiating from the centre to each corner of the square. The enamel appears to be a pale blue or green. A circular sectioned shaft is present which appears to be glued into an indentation at the centre. The shaft terminates in a worn break. Two broken and worn parallel lugs are present to the reverse of the object which is otherwise flat and undecorated.   The me…

A near complete, copper alloy object, possibly a strap slide of likely late Iron Age to early Roman date (c. 50 BC - AD 50). The object has a flat, circular head that is decorated on the outer face. The decoration has a solid border around the edge, within which there are eight triangular cells around the edge that point towards a central circular cell, all of which are inlaid with a red enamel. The rest of the field forms a high-relief eight pointed star. On the reverse, there are three connected loops. The loops are trapezoidal in plan and sub-rectangular in profile, with two s…

A cast, copper-alloy, decorated fragment of an unknown object, depicting a wing. It is probably Roman to Post-medieval in date (c. AD 43-1500). It is possible that the fragment is part of a figurine, but could also be part of a dress fastener or brooch. The feathers of the wing are created by a variety of champlevé cells which would have been filled with enamel. It is unclear whether the wing is representative of a type of bird or even perhaps an angel. There are worn breaks at both ends of the object. It is possible that there were attachment poin…

A small cast copper-alloy fragment with enamelled decoration, probably of Roman date (c. AD 100-250). The object is now of irregular form, with breaks to all sides. It may have formed part of a (plate) brooch, though such an identification is by no means certain. The reverse is flat and undecorated, now slightly corroded. The front is decorated with very low relief moulded open pointed ovals, conceivably petals, that radiate from a former central point. Parts of three such petals survive, their spacing implying six originally. Within each petal is decayed enamel that now appears a gree…

A late Iron Age (c.100 BC to c.100 AD) incomplete or fragment of a copper-alloy cast artefact. The artefact is sub-rectangular with the longer, upper edge being broken. This break is not recent. The lower and side edges are curved towards the reverse terminating with a flat edge as if the object butted against a flat surface. The curvature of the sides gives the object a slight bulbous appearance with a hollow, undecorated reverse. The surface of the reverse is rough and a well-developed patina has not been created unlike the outer face. The outer face of the artefact is deco…

A fragment of cast copper alloy and enamel object of unknown purpose, but certainly of Roman date (c. 43-410 AD). The object represents only a fragment of an unknown object, ending in breaks at both ends (the sides appear to be damaged original edges). The object is very broadly rectangular in shape, though the longer edges are concave. These edges are 12.3mm wide in the middle, and 20.17mm at the top and 21.2mm wide at the bottom. The object runs in a slight curve, with concave reverse and convex front. The broken top edge of the object projects slightly more than the bottom. The rev…

Unidentified copper-alloy object, possibly a button or other kind of dress accessory, of uncertain post-medieval date. It is circular and domed (convex on the front and concave on reverse) with a small circular central hole. The front is mostly covered with blobs of enamel, arranged in four concentric rings alternating between black and white. Beginning at the inner ring and moving towards the outermost, the enamel is coloured black-white-black-white. The blobs increase in size from the smallest at the innermost to the largest at the third ring. The outer blobs in the fourth ring are …

Unidentified object of unknown date. Copper alloy strip with three parallel grooves running the full length of the object on the outer face, and four on the inner face. These grooves appear to contain traces of black, or very dark blue, enamel. The upper edge of the object, and the two short ends, are smooth and slightly round and therefore appear to be a finished, undamaged edges. The long lower edge of the object, however, is slightly rough. It is unclear if this is a broken edge. If it is, the patination would suggest it is an old break. Both ends of the strip have been bent i…

FURTHER FRAGMENTS OF THIS HAVE BEEN FOUND. WAITING FOR THEIR HAND-IN TO RECORD AS A WHOLE. Fragmented copper alloy and enamel Iron age object. The segment to hand consists of a flat four sided plate the longest side of which has broken across three linearly aligned bordered circular cells, that contain the remains of red enamel. It is not possible to determine any hint of the original shape from this fragment as all edges are degraded and eroded making any original edge indistinguishable from a broken one. Decoration can be seen on the corroded surface consisti…

An incomplete copper alloy object of uncertain date, AD 43 - 1800. It is a large bar of copper alloy, 21.6mm wide and 2.3mm thick at one (broken) end, then tapering in width and thickening to the mid point which is broadly square in cross-section, where the plane of the object changes, so the other end is 17.2mm thick and 2.5mm wide. The first end described has a small circular rivet hole of 2.3mm diameter through it. This end of the bar is also curved, so the main faces are concave and convex. The convex face is decorated. An oblong copper alloy Roman object, probably dating from AD 100 - 300. It is a chunky rectangular plaque of copper alloy. There is a Swash-N design on the front with traces of red and blue enamel decoration, all within a reserved border. The rear has a channel running across the width, not quite centrally positioned. The notch is 1.6mm deep and 2.5mm wide. It joins a slot cut in one of the long edges. The slot is 2mm deep, 10.6mm long, and 1.7mm wide. At one end, the slot is much deeper, probably because it interacts with a casting flaw. There are more casting flaws at the other end …

The opposite end is imbedded with iron, part of a tang/blade. Each face is similar and has a line of three 'chevron'-like cells on the same alignment, all pointing towards the terminal. A small and worn copper alloy object of probable early Roman date (c. AD 43-200). Within the face of the fitting is a cinquefoil annulet design set within a recessed circular field which would have been filled with enamel but of which none now survives. The centre of the annulets probably also held enamel, likely of a contrasting colour to that of the background. The reverse of the fitting is ever-so-slightly concave, but …
