A fragment of Roman copper alloy headstud brooch dating to AD 75-200 (Mackreth type Headstud 5.).  The brooch is missing the foot of the bow, most of the catchplate and the top of the bow (it appears that the bow has broken across the centre line of the headstud).  The bow is decorated with the semi-circular curve of the remaining headstud.  Below this the centre of the front of the bow is decorated with cross-mouldings creating a lattice of cells down the centre with with half cells along either side and an incised line along the outer edge.  The central cells…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy umbonate brooch, with enamel decoration, dating to c AD 100 - 250. Mackreth type British Plate, Petalled Boss Type 7.a. (Mackreth 2011, vol. 1 p.166, vol. 2 pl. 109 no. 12640). The pin is missing, the curl of the catchplate incomplete and a loop on the outer edge probably to attach the brooch to another via a chain, remains only as a stub. It is sub circular but six equidistant lugs on the perimeter, the damaged loop and a larger lug lying opposite the loop, make the brooch more properly octagonal. In the centre, on the upper su…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a duck, dating to c. AD 100-200. The body is sub-oval with a fairly flat plate for the duck's back, rising towards the head and neck, and slightly to the rear. The body is decorated with four fanned cells, representing the duck's back and possibly folded wings. The cells show evidence of red enamel, although much is eroded. The neck and head are slender, curved and bent towards the right, possibly contorted due to the brooch's location. The bill is curved, flattened and sweeping. On the …

An incomplete Roman copper alloy and enamel Roman (but possibly British made) plate brooch, dating to c AD 150 - 300. It is missing its pin. It is circular with two concentric zones, each with an outer margin, and with a raised feature at the centre which may not be integral. This is a trumpet shape with flared, circular top which has chamfered edges. It is uncertain whether or not the slightly concave cell at the apex held a stone on what is now a roughened grey surface. The zone around the base of the cone is a crumbling, and partly missing, very dark blue, apparently set upon a…

A fragment of a possible copper alloy headstud or proto- headstud Roman brooch, dating to cAD 75 - 200. All that remains is a short section of curving bow, with early breaks at both ends. It has a D shape section, narrowing to a flat section where a likely six-sided cell has been superimposed on the convex side of the bow. The upper break obscures part of this cell but what is extant shows that the central rectangular section was divided by ridges into smaller rectangular cells. Four smaller cells and two more parts of cells remain, with evidence of probable en…
