Towards the end of the 13th century, sterlings of the Low Countries began to circulate widely (but unofficially) in England. Their issuers increasingly imitated the English penny in an effort to ensure their ready acceptance. Gaucher, constable of France and count of Porcien, held a fief of Florennes by right of his wife Isabelle of Rumigny, whom he married in 1313. In 1318 Ferry IV, duke of Lorraine, agreed to Gaucher's striking coin in Isabelle's territories during her lifetime on condition that only those types also being issued at Nancy should be used, and that profits should be divided equally; in 1322 Isabelle died. It may be significant that no Gaucher coins were found in the Upper Cullmore find of c. 1315.Gaucher struck two types of sterling at Yves. The first [...] reads +GALChSCOMESPORC [on the obverse and] MONETA NOVA YVE [on the reverse] while the second, which has four main varieties, reads +EDWARANGLDNShYB with London, Canterbury, Lincoln and even Waterford reverse legends. Sterlings in Gaucher's name occur either with or without privy marks. Those without privy marks share a number of punches with the Edward series, with which they are probably broadly contemporary. Type 239. This type, also with trifoliate crown, may be difficult to distinguish from the previous type. In fact the face and hair are generally larger, and a wedge R is used. It is the last and most plentiful of the Gaucher imitation without privy marks (Mayhew 1983: 93-95). </notes><imagedir>images/jbaxter2/</imagedir><updated>2011-02-24T13:14:58Z</updated><categoryTerm>Non English coin</categoryTerm><reverseLegend>MON ETN OVA YVE</reverseLegend><quantity>1</quantity><todate>1322</todate><broadperiod>MEDIEVAL</broadperiod><fourFigureLat>52.911927</fourFigureLat><reverseDescription>long cross dividing legend with pellets in angles</reverseDescription><description> Silver hammered sterling imitation of Gaucher of Chatillon, c.1313-1322.
