<description>
<full>Medieval Coin: Heavily clipped and worn hammered silver penny probably of Henry VII (1485&#45;1509). An ecclesiastical issue under the Bishop John Sherwood (1480&#45;1500) at Durham mint.
Pennies issued by Bishop Sherwood at Durham during the reigns of both Henry VII and his predecessor Richard III are almost indistinguishable when the obverse legends have been lost through clipping and wear, as in this case. The Portable Antiquities Medieval coins advisor gave the following comments on the identification of this coin:
&quot;I think it is most probably Henry VII rather than Richard III, although both do indeed have the S on the bust and D on the centre of the cross. However, both the crown shape and the only visible cross end are more comfortably Henry than Richard. North no. 1723&quot;
Coin Reference: North Volume II, probably number 1723.</full>

<full>A clipped late Medieval silver half groat, probably of Henry VII (1485&#45;1509 AD). Canterbury Mint, of Episcopal Issue by Archbiship Morton (1486&#45;1500 AD) as indicated by the &#39;M&#39; in the centre of the reverse. Initial mark is probably a long cross fichee, dating the coin more specifically to between c. 1485&#45;1490 AD.
The obverse depicts a bust with double&#45;arched unjewelled crown facing with possible quattrefoil on either side of the neck; legend reads: + [......] DI GR[A] REX ANGL [Z] FRA. The end to this legend is more common to that of Henry VIII; however, it is unlikely that this coin should be attributed to the later period. There are lis in the cusps. The reverse depicts a long cross pattee with three pellets in each quadrant and a Lombardic &#39;M&#39; in the centre; the outer legend reads: POS[VI] DEVM A&#45;DIVTOR&#45;EM MEV; inner legend reads: CIVITAS CANTOR. Cf. North 1991, Vol II, No. 1711.</full>

COIN</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A silver Post Medieval coin which was clearly not intended for circulation as money, because it has two obverses, but which would presumably not have passed as a counterfeit. It is imitating a coin of Henry VII, but it does not match any known coin type. It appears that each face was struck from a different die, so it is not a straightforward brockage.
Paul Withers comments that it is &quot;a good counterfeit, an accurate enough legend and the dies made with proper punches. Whoever made it had had not only skill, but had had lots of practice, and access to a good workshop.&quot; He also suggests that it could have been used for a heads or tails scam!
Although the coin looks to date from about 1475 &#45; 1525, it is also possible that it is a modern imitation. The coin is bent and there are a couple of chips in the edge.</full>
