Medieval coin: penny of Edward III (1279-1377) minted in the royal mint at York probably between 1354 and 1355. Pre-treaty Series E, Stewartby p. 264.
The coin has been identified by Peter D. Spencer as a particularly rare coin as the reverse is that of the Series E pre-treaty type, whereas the obverse legend matches that of post-treaty coins. However, he notes, that post-treaty coins were minted at the archbishops' mint not the royal mint. Mr. Spencer further comments that the coin is not listed in North or was seen in the Doubleday collectionbut is only referenced in Stewartby.
