Silver coin. Halfpenny of Edward III (1327-1377); if not perhaps a penny of Edward IV (1461-1470 and 1471-1483), probably York mint. The tall crown of Edward III’s Fourth Coinage (1351-1377) is perhaps the earliest this coin’s obverse could belong to, so this should be a later medieval issue of 1351-1483 Obverse description: facing bare-shouldered bust with tall bifoliate crown whose ornaments appear to touch; initial mark Plain cross. Obverse inscription: possibly +E[---]ANGLI Reverse description: long cross, three pellets in each angle, central quatrefoil Reverse…

Two joining fragments of a long cross silver Medieval hammered coin; probably a penny of Edward III to Richard II, AD 1327 to 1485. The coin is very worn and damaged, however a quatrefoil in the centre of the reverse long cross suggests it was a York Archepiscopal, minted in York.  The largest piece is 13.1mm long, 6.7mm wide, 0.4mm thick and weighs 0.29g.  The second fragement is 12.3mm long, 5.9mm wide, 0.4mm thick and weighs 0.19g.

Pierced incomplete  silver medieval penny of Edward III or Richard II dating to the period of AD 1327-1399. Long cross reverse. Mint uncertain. Some pierced/modified coins can come within the remits of Treasure Act 1996, including all finds of pierced silver or gold coins up to AD 1180 and some thereafter depending upon the nature of the piercing. Pierced medieval and later silver coins are however fairly common single finds and many are also known from hoards. On this coin the piercing is not exactly aligned on either the reverse cross or the obverse bust whi…
