Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper alloy Roman globular-headed pin, probably a tack or nail, c. 43-410 AD. The object consists of an undecorated generally spherical head, with a small sub-square-sectioned tapering shaft. It is possible that there is a small portion of the pin shaft missing; however this is unclear due to the high level of surface corrosion on the object. It measures 15.43 mm long, 3.25 mm thick, with a diameter of 9.61 at the head; weight: 3.64 grams.
These types of simply formed pins are attributed to furniture upholstery in Crummy 1983, Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman…

An incomplete cast copper alloy ring with an inset dark blue glass intaglio. Henig Type III. The ring is in very poor condition, with only a shallow oval bezel with raised collar to hold the intaglio and the immediately connected sides of the band intact. Both the bezel cross-section and band segments are flat. The ring fragment measures 16.92 mm long, 7.96 mm wide, 1.8mm thick and weighs 0.85 grams. The inlaid material is deep…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
An incomple polished Neolithic axehead (c. 3500-2100 BC). The remains of the axehead consist of the pointed butt-end of the object and some of the axehead body. Approximately 35-50% of the axehead remains, with two sharp hinge fractures near the surface of the break. The axehead is roughly oval in cross-section and the surface has been polished evenly on both surfaces. All surfaces, broken and complete, bear the same light grey patina, indicating that the breaks are probably of a similar date to the object. It does not seem likely that chipping visible on the edges suggests purposeful…

A corroded and incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy saddle pommel. Only the majority of one half survives, from a break running down a central moulded ridge. The pommel half would have originally been a hollow semi-circle in section with one end closed and the other open. At the closed segment one side of the hemisphere is missing due to old damage. At the open end there is a V-notch removed just short of the opening which forms a sub-rectangular strap or tab at the end. This tab has a circular rivet hole placed close to the broken end and the remains of a further circular hole …
