Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint knapped flake of possible Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date, (3500-1500 BC). The flake seems to be missing its platform from an old break at the proximal end and its bulb of percussion, however a few deep ripples are visible on the ventral surface. No signs of retouch remain to suggest that this flake was prepared for a specific use. The flint is of a mottled light to dark grey colour, with a small orange circular surface colouration on the dorsal distal end. It measures 41.06 mm long, 28.61 mm wide, 5.55 mm thick and weighs 8.69 grams.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible core trimming of uncertain date, probably between the Mesolithic and early Bronze Age period (c. 8300-1500 BC). The object is pyriform in plan, with a widening sub-triangular cross-section. Light ripples are visible on one face, but the bulb and platform of percussion is missing. No small retouch is visible although there are microlithic removals on what is presumably the semi-circular distal edge. A small strip of cortex remains on the dorsal surface, running from the mesial edge to one of the outer edges, near the distal end. Dispersed fractures on both surfaces revea…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint knapped flake, probably dating to either the Mesolithic or Neolithic period (8300-2100 BC). Although the platform is missing, there is a strong bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples present on the ventral surface. No signs of retouch or further knapping are visible to suggest that this flake was modified as a tool. It measures 35.37 mm long, 22.75 mm wide, 4.83 mm thick and weighs 6.99 grams.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A coarse worked flint object, probably fashioned from a natural break to form a crude scraper. It is likely that this scraper dates to the Bronze Age, or perhaps later, due to the quality of the knapping and size. The angle of retouch on the distal end is nearly abrupt, at an approximately 80-degree angle. One large ripple of percussion is visible on the dorsal face and a portion of the bulb remains on the ventral side. It is unclear whether a small point of the platform remains or whether this object was originally produced by a natural percussive force and then subsequently reto…

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and partially knapped Mesolithic flint object, probably an adze, but possibly a large core (c. 8300-3500 BC). The remains of the object consist of what looks like the butt-end of an adze and possibly a third to a half of the small adze body; it has been knapped on all sides with long blade removals and smaller removals near to the butt. It is missing a portion of its body and potentially its cutting edge; a tranchet or lateral flake cannot be identified to confirm this object as a tranchet adze, as it would appear on the blade end, now missing. Typical to adzes of this…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two incomplete well-knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowheads dating from the late Neolithic to middle Bronze Age (c. 2500-c. 1150 BC). The arrowheads have been bifacially worked and sub-triangular in plan, with two notches in the base between the central tang and a barb at either side. Both arrowheads have one completely missing barb, with some damage to the central tang. The arrowhead has invasive shallow scaler retouch on both faces, however one arrowhead has an unretouched area in the centre of one face. The flint is of a light grey colour for both, with one arrowhead possessi…

An incomple polished Neolithic axehead (c. 3500-2100 BC). The remains of the axehead consist of the pointed butt-end of the object and some of the axehead body. Approximately 35-50% of the axehead remains, with two sharp hinge fractures near the surface of the break. The axehead is roughly oval in cross-section and the surface has been polished evenly on both surfaces. All surfaces, broken and complete, bear the same light grey patina, indicating that the breaks are probably of a similar date to the object. It does not seem likely that chipping visible on the edges suggests purposeful…

Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint microlith, dating to the Mesolithic period (8300-3500 BC). The microlith is sub-oval in plan and sub-lozengiform in cross-section. A small hinge fracture suggests that this microlith was hafted; it is retouched carefully on both long edges into a point. The flint is of an even dark grey material. It measures 20.29 mm long, 8.19 mm wide, 3.39 mm thick and weighs 0.67 grams.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crudely knapped flint flake, retouched to form a thumbnail scraper, probably dating to the late Neolithic-early Bronze Age (2500-1500 BC). The scraper is sub-triangular in plan, with a very pointed proximal end; the point could have been used as a further tool, perhaps a piercer. The distal end of the dorsal face shows 45-degree angle of retouch, with larger than usual removals interspersed with some smaller ones. The ventral face retains a very large bulb towards its centre, with no ripples or platform discernible. There is some possible evidence of retouch on the distal end of …

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probably unfinished knapped flint object, possibly a later Neolithic-early Bronze Age piercer or similar perforating tool (c. 2500-1500 BC). Due to a high degree of light grey patination, the coarse texture of the flint and high degree of post-depositional wear on the edges of the flint, it is uncertain to what degree this was retouched. Sub-triangular in cross-section. A portion of the platform, a larger bulb of percussion and light ripples remain on the ventral face. The proximal end on the dorsal face seems to have been retouched into a severe point, typical to piercer points…

A knapped flint end scraper, probably dating to between the late Neolithic and Bronze Age periods (c. 2500-800 BC). The lithic implement is sub-oval in plan, with approximately 40% of its dorsal face covered in cortex, perhaps to facilitate handling. A large platform of percussion remains; in addition a very large bulb and very light ripples are evident on the ventral face. The dorsal face has been retouched on its distal end, with a semi-abrupt to abrupt angle of removal and the side edges seem to have been purposefully blunted, again to facilitate handling. The exposed flint mat…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint blade finished into a crudely worked notched tool, such as a burin, dating to between the late Mesolithic and early Neolithic (6500-2900 BC). The proximal end has snapped off, including the platform and bulb; it is possible to feel ripples on the ventral face. A portion of on of the long edges of the blade seems to have been purposefully blunted, perhaps to facilitate handling. The mesial edge has possibly been retouched crudely and minimally for use as a scraper; however, due to the poor state of the flint blade, this is uncertain. The flint implement m…

A flint thumbnail scraper probably dating to the Bronze Age, c. 2150-800 BC. The scraper is missing its platform of percussion, but evidence of a large bulb and ripples are visible on the ventral surface. The distal edge of the dorsal surface has been retouched thoroughly at an abrupt (nearly 90-degree) angle; retouch continues along the mesial edge on the dorsal side; there is no purposeful retouch on the ventral face, but multiple areas exhibit wear. A large flake has been removed from the top of the dorsal face, presumably to facilitate handling. The scraper measures 47.12 mm l…

A flint worked flake, crudely retouched into an end scraper, probably dating to the Neolithic period, particularly the early Neolithic (c. 3500-2900 BC). The dorsal face has sustained a large amount of damage, resulting in two notches on both long edges of the tool, presumably both naturally made, not knapped. The platform and bulb have been removed on the ventral face, but conchoidal ripples are evident. The distal dorsal edge has been crudely retouched in order to create a scraper edge with an approximate 30 degree knapping angle and a few large parallel removals; however, it is unl…
