An extremely worn pierced copper alloy disc of uncertain date. Although no detail remains on either side, this disc is the right size and thickness to have been a Roman As or Dupondius. It is possible to see abrasion lines where the surface has either been cleaned recently or perhaps where the surface detail was smoothed away. The possible coin has been modified; it is pierced with a circular hole on one end, presumably to facilitate suspension as a pendant. The patina is of a deep even green colour, the quality of which is in keeping with coins from the Roman imperial period. Bec…

An extremely worn and bent silver 'Tealby' (Cross-and-crosslets) penny of Henry II (AD 1154-1189). The obverse is almost entirely illegible, however it is possible to see the beaded decoration of the crowned bust's collar similar to Spink 1337E. The reverse legend is almost completely illegible, however it is possible to see 'ON G/C[...]' which suggests that the mint was Gloucester or perhaps Canterbury or Carlisle. Moneyer unknown. Cf. North 1994 Vol I, Nos. 952-61, dating to c. 1154-1180.

An extremely worn Medieval voided silver long cross penny of Henry III (AD 1216-1272). Class 3, c. AD 1248-1250. Mint of Norwich; Moneyer: Willem. Although the coin is extremely worn and damaged with a cut running through half of the coin, it is possible to discern details that allow for a positive identification. The obverse legend reads: hENRICV[S] [REX III] and does not seem to depict a scepter with the crowned bust. The 'ENR' are all ligated. The reverse legend reads: WILLEM [ONN] ORW. The coin has suffered post-depositional circumferential losses. Cf. North Vol I, Nos. 986-988.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman T-shaped Brooch, dating from the 1st-2nd century AD. The remains of the brooch consist of a portion of the integrally-cast projecting head loop, followed by a 30.03 mm wide and 4.4 mm diameter cylindrical axial cross-bar tube, a tapering sub-triangular body and sub-oval moulded foot knop (6.45 mm diam). The cross-bar is decorated simply with three vertically-incised lines at either end. Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy Post Medieval uniface token, c. 1550-1800 AD. Powell type 2. It is discoidal in shape and grey in colour. The token is decorated with raised initial 'TH' on one side and the other is plain. It measures 19.92 mm in diameter, 2.36 mm thick and weighs 5.5 grams. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely. Those with intials are thought to be Post Medieval in date, c. 1550-1800 AD.

A cast lead alloy Medieval or Post Medieval token, probably uniface, in poor condition, c. 1200-1800 AD. Probably Powell Type 30. The token is flat and generally oval in shape. It seems to have been decorated with only a simplistic raised line running through the centre on one side and perhaps a pellet. The other face has three incised lines on the surface, but this seems to be due to damage, not purposeful decoration. It measures 27.45 mm long, 23.06 mm wide, 3.03 mm thick and weighs 10.73 grams. Lead tokens were locally manufactured and easily distributed; as such, they are diffic…

The pin is decorated on the outer surface of its base with a transverse moulded ridge. There is no further decoration. The buckle frame measures …

An incomplete cast copper alloy animal rumbler or 'crotal' bell dating to the early Post Medieval period, c. 16th-17th century AD. The bell is spherical in form with a raised circumferential join and an integrally cast sub-rectangular suspension loop with circular hole. Both hemispheres of the bell are decorated: the upper with an overall sunburst pattern and the lower with an elaborate fishscale pattern. This combination of decorative elements seems to have been popular during the 16th to 17th centuries, but rarely found on bells made after the 17th century. The integrally cast s…

The obverse depicts a crowned and diademed bearded bust facing three-quarters left, holding sceptre in right hand; obverse legend reads: [STI]EFN[E] (R?). The reverse seems to depict a cross voided within a beaded quatrefoil; in each angle, a fleur springing from the quatrefoil. The reverse legend is nearly missing, but 'ARN' is clearly visible partway through, suggesting that the moneyer may have been Arnwi, listed as a moneyer from Lincoln; this informatio…

An extremely worn and bent complete silver Post Medieval coin, probably fashioned into a love token from a sixpence of William III (1694-1702 AD). It is likely that this is a love token, as detail on the coin seems to have been purposefully worn away and the coin is bent, although not in the typical 'S' curve of most love tokens. On the obverse 'LL' remains from the legend and the profile of the ruler is consistent with portraits of William III, further suggesting that this identification is correct in spite of the coin's poor condition. It measures 19.17 mm long, 15.88 mm wide, 0.…
