Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and corroded lead-alloy token of probable Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1250-1800). It is decorated on one side with a six petalled flower, (Powell type 1) whilst the other depicts the initials '·T·C·' with a further pellet above (Powell type 2). The token has a very thin body with a light grey-white patina. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally. They are therefore hard to date precisely and examples with simple designs could be Medieval to late Post Medieval in date (c. AD 1250-1800)

A worn and corroded lead-alloy weight of probable Post Medieval date (c. AD 1550-1800). The weight is circular in plan and flat in section, with slightly tapering sides. On the upper surface, a single motif, probably an 8 pointed star or petalled flower is visible but now worn; the underside is plain. It has a mid white-grey colour overall. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely, although most are late Medieval to Post Medieval. The decoration on this particular example suggests a Post Medieval date. This weight measur…

A complete but slightly damaged cast lead-alloy Medieval seal matrix, probably dating to the 13th-14th centuries AD. The seal matrix is circular in plan and broadly flat in section. It depicts a central eight petalled flower within a solid circle, with the petals at the cardinal points tear shaped, and those at the diagonals formed from two lines. The legend, also enclosed within a solid circle, reads: S'IONET[-]S FIL W[--]S' (possibly the seal of John son of W...), although it is rather unclear with a pitted and fragmentary surface. The N is reverse-barred. The seal matrix has also b…

A worn and corroded lead-alloy weight in the form of a seal matrix of probable Medieval to Post Medieval date. The weight is formed of a fluted hexagonal in plan body which tapers out to form a now sub-circular in plan die; it is probable that this die was previously hexagonal in plan but the defined edges have been removed through extensive abrasion. At the uppermost portion of the narrowed fluted body is a small oval aperture which pierces the body to form a narrowed attachment loop. On the base of the weight is an inscription, which might possibly represent a Roman numeral 'II' or …

A complete but worn and corroded lead-alloy steelyard weight of probable Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The weight is circular in plan and conical in form, with a circular suspension loop of iron extending from the flattened apex (15.5mm in length, 13.1mm in diameter); the aperture of the loop has been concealed by extensive corrosion product. The iron that forms this loop also appears to extend through the entire body of the weight, as traces of red brown corrosion are visible at the point of the conical form. This artefact has corroded to a white colour overall and weighs 30.91 grams.
