Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Silver hooked tag of sub-triangular form with two attachment holes, the decoration on the plate originally inlaid with niello, and the upper right-hand corner broken away. The decoration consists of a lobed and scrolled foliate design around a central 'V'-shaped motif, with a lightly ribbed border on the two longer sides. The back is plain. Discussion: The hooked tag is a typical example of a well-known class of later 8th- and 9th-century allpurpose fastening used to secure clothing (including gartering), and purses and small bags. The lobed leaf and pendant scrolls of this piece reca…

Silver-gilt buckle with a triangular plate, recently broken in two pieces. The oval loop, of D shaped section, is cast in one with the plate. It has a false shield-on-tongue composed of two stepped, crescentic panels, each decorated with a band of interlace now obscured by corrosion. The base of the tongue is an elongated oval, the tip is now missing. At the junction of the loop and plate, on each side of the narrow flange bordering the latter, is a garnet-inlaid collared boss with a beaded rim. One of the garnets is a cabochon, the other is flat-cut and was presumably a replacement i…

A cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon S-brooch from the 6th century AD. It is a closed S shape in plan, with an integral catchplate and a hinge for the pin on the reverse. The front has two raised lateral ridges that follow the S shape from the top to the bottom of the brooch, creating three cells. The pin is missing, but was made of iron; iron corrosion is visible on the reverse at the hinge and catchplate. Many examples of this type are zoomorphic, however corrosion hides any evidence of this, if any, on the brooch. The brooch is in fair condition and is a light green colour. It me…

Towards one end, the loop expands before becoming a flat, rectangular end, which has a central hole; this end is now broken at the right corner. The other end contracts before it flattens, and curves outwards. It too is broken at this end, with no remnant of a form of attachment to a bar. It meas…
