A large lead shield shaped weight dating from the Medieval/Post Medieval period. At 15 and ¼ oz, this was probably a 1lb weight originally. There are also the remains of iron pieces embedded in the lead. Two pieces of iron look to have been bent over each other to maybe form a suspension loop, or attachment mount, but the iron has corroded away. The weight has a length of 59.76mm, width 48.14mm, thickness 19.45mm, weight 430g. A similar but 8oz weight is SWYOR-352D55. Biggs and Withers note that these weights probably started to be used in the 13th century, but some were in use up un…

A large fragment flattened lead artefact consisting of an oval shaped disc with scalloped edges, one end of which has broken away in antiquity and is missing. The 'pie crust' edges would have once been vertical walls. The letters I W are impressed into the centre of the oval from the side with the walls. The letters are visible in relief on the other face where they read "W I" but only faintly. Traces of a second identical disc survive, the two having been stacked together. The less complete disc is on the impressed and walled side of the first. It is visible on the walls, and its edg…

A medieval, pointed oval, lead-alloy seal matrix. The seal carries the inscription *S'WALTER:SONDhE surrounding a central motif that appears to be a stylised fleur-de-lis. At some later date, a circular hole has been drilled in the face of the seal, through the central motif, The reverse of the seal is flat and carries a rectangular suspension loop, crudely drilled with a circular hole. It is 33mm long, 19.9wide, and 9.9mm thick. It weighs 12.17gm. Seal matrices of pointed oval shape, generally cast in lead, are typical of the 13th century AD. Indeed, Harvey and McGuinness note that t…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire

A lead weight which weighs 3.99oz and so was probably intended to be a 4oz weight. Its length is 42.9mm and it has a width of 39.4mm. It has a weight of 113.15g. It is an oval domed shape with a rough circle on the base, possibly from the casting. It is not decorated and it has a thick white patina. Undecorated objects are very difficult to date but the exactness of the weigh may suggest that it is post medieval in date.
