Fragment of gilt mount, probably a furniture fitting, broken at both ends and across division between two cusped edges on one side, the other side straight, plain borders around cusps and along straight edge, with transverse reserved pointed oval between, on a field of transverse lines of finely engraved interrupted rocker-arm engraving giving the appearance of tiny addorsed triangles and is pierced by a rivet-hole. The edge of the smaller cusp projects forward, as if for a setting, and is pierced by a tiny rivet-hole. >18 x >35mm. 12th-13th century

Very unusual book mount or clasp, but without hook. It has a very slightly flaring 'fishtail' end, and opposed rectangular projections at the other end. This end would usually have a projecting broad blunt hook, but there is no trace of one here. The rectangular area formed from the opposed rectangular projections is decorated with a longitudinal rib (transverse to the long axis of the entire fitting), which is decorated with oblique grooves. A rectangular panel survives at one end with engraved transverse grooves; there are also traces of longitudinal median grooves, 15 x 24mm.
