A copper-alloy medieval lace tag or chape (similar those illustrated in Egan and Pritchard 1991, 288). It is oval in cross-section, hollow and evenly rolled. The body is decorated with incised lines forming a rectangle filled with linked crosses, interrupted by a central vertical line. Below the rectangle the mount thins and is heavily scored. A corroded and worn terminal fragment of a Roman copper-alloy patera (small saucepan) handle, in the shape of a ram's head. The ram has the corroded remains of curled horns on either side, and the terminal then narrows to a point to create the elongated face and nose of the ram. There is a worn depression on either side of the face to form the eyes. The terminal has fallen away from the rest of the handle behind the ram's horns; it seems the head was cast separately to the handle and soldered on (remains of a silver-coloured material can be seen on this surface). However there is a sm…

A corroded and worn fragment of a late Iron Age/early Roman copper-alloy Langton Down brooch with enamel decoration. The head and wings of the brooch are almost intact, with the lower surface of the wings enclosing the spring mechanism (the right side of the spring is missing the wing's cover). The wings are cylindrical, and are unbroken by the decoration on the bow. The spring has broken before the emergence of the pin. Both terminals of the wings are also broken and corroded. The bow has broken after 13.4mm, but enough remains to show its reasonable sharp curve towards the spring/pin…

A worn and corroded cast copper-alloy object with iron corrosion at one end, of possible Roman date. The object is a linear shaft (square in cross-section) leading to a semicircular section. The shaft is decorated with incised transverse lines, some of which are on all four faces, some on only one. The terminal end of the object is broken (split) and filled with iron corrosion, suggesting this part of a larger object. The semicircular section is domed on the outer surface, but the inner surface has been cast to recreate a cylindrical hole through the centre perpendicular to the shaft. …

A worn and corroded medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy cooking vessel rim fragment. The rim thins to a rounded ridge, but the fragment overall is reasonable thin (particularly for its projected diameter). The other three edges are uneven breaks, but are well worn, suggesting they are old. On the inner face of the vessel are two oval holes (the largest is 7.8mm x 3.4mm) caused by air trapped in the vessel mould. The fragment is covered in a light-green patina. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.1250-1650 for serving and cooking.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast baluster seal knop from a copper-alloy ('latten') spoon handle. There is a stub of the stem of the handle surviving: enough to show that its cross-section was sub-circular with a diameter of c. 4.3mm. The knop design is relatively simple, consisting only of a baluster, which flares out to a diameter of 10.7mm, and the seal top. The sub-circular seal top, c. 17mm diameter, is flat on the upper side and covered in iron corrosion. This type of spoon knop was common from the mid-16th to the mid-17th century. Moore (1999, 5) attributes their contemporary popularity to the fa…

A medieval cast copper-alloy rectangular buckle with a decorated integral split plate, with the remnants of an iron pin and an in situ iron rivet; possibly a spur buckle. The rectangular buckle is bevelled and plain, with a flat reverse. Beyond the pin hole the plate narrows then widens (W.: 12.9mm) to create the base of a fleur-de-lis. At the narrowest point of the fleur-de-lis the plate splits into two. The lower plate is cruder…
