Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy seal matrix with religious scene. Probably dates from the 14th century AD. A seal with a similar central image is illustrated by P. Harvey and A. McGuinness in the book 'A guide to British medieval seals' (1996; pp. 105). The object is vessica-shaped and the detail is crisply executed. The central image depicts the heads and torsos of the Virgin Mary and young Christ. A beaded arc - probably the heavily stylised canopy of a throne - separates Mary and Christ from a suppliant figure (probably a monk) below. The legend is contained on each side by a beaded border and, w…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy clapper bell of possible Roman date. (AD 43 - AD 410). The bell is dome-shaped and has the intact suspension loop at the apex. The walls are solid and there is no indication that they may have been perforated as is the case with some Roman bells. The outer surface has some circumferential lines. Part of the lower end of the bell is missing due to old breaks. The bell is full of soil, so it is uncertain whether any part of the clapper or its attachments survive. The outer surface has a dull mid-green patina. Roman bells are fairly common on military s…

A heavily corroded copper-alloy heraldic horse harness pendant of probable 14th century date (N. Griffiths; 1986; pp. 1). The object consists of a rectangular plate and the hanger. This plate is heavily corroded rendering the design nigh indecipherable, but the image seems to be a six-petalled flower. The reverse is undecorated. The hanger is set at right angles to the plate. It is flat, has rounded edges, and a small circular hole which, due to wear, has become elongated at the top. The plate retains traces of red colour and gilding. The object measures 33.9mm high, 20.5mm wide an…
