A fragment of a probable copper-alloy Early-Medieval Small-long brooch; circa 500 AD to 600 AD date (R. Hattatt, 2000, p. 377, No. 1304). The fragment consists of a part of the head and the start of the bow. The under side of the head has two lugs, where the iron axis bar would have been attached, as attested by remains of the iron corrosion. One of the holes is corroded shut, and the other has half of it broken off. The top of the head is also missing. Both the head and the bow are undecorated and have green patina on them.
The object measures 8.9mm high, 14.1mm wide, and 0.7mm thi…

Bent and broken Early-Medieval copper-alloy disc brooch; circa 450-550 AD date. The plate, which is circular in plan, has a double grooved border 4.5mm in from the outer edge, thus creating a circular central panel. Towards the centre, there is an additional single line groove, and at the centre, there is a dot inside a ring, which is a typical decoration for this period. On the reverse, the pin and any pin attachment are missing. The catchplate remains, however, and it is set at a right angle to the plate and has a rolled top edge. The object measures 32.1mm in diameter, is 6.8mm thi…

A fragment of a middle Anglo-Saxon ansate brooch with possible zoomorphic decoration. A fragment of bow and one terminal survive; the terminal tapers towards the rounded end, which has two ring-and-dot motifs resembling the eyes of a snake's head. Two transverse grooves and a ridge separate the terminal from the bow. Only very little survives of the catchplate on the reverse of the terminal, which is longitudinal and set to one side. The fragment measures 22mm long, 9.6mm wide and 8mm thick. The weight is 1.8g.

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An open-ended gilt copper-alloy ring of possible late Early-medieval date. There is much debate as to the function and date of these artefacts. They are thought by some to be ear-rings; however, the thickness of the terminals would seem to make them unsuitable for this purpose and a more likely explanation is that they are finger-rings. Similar gilt finger-rings have been described as Anglo-Scandinavian, although the recorder knows of no examples from securely dated contexts.
The object has been cast in one piece and consists of a squashed (originally) circular hoop. The body is of …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An unidentified copper-alloy object. No parallel could be found for this piece, but the general form and decoration suggest that it may be a mount from an early Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) bucket (see J.M.Cook; 2004).
The object is pelta-shaped, the extension at the top having been broken off. It is thin in secion and has a slight curvature, which may be original or the result of post-depositional damage. There is a small rivet hole at the centre and, on the reverse, evidence of an adhesive paste or solder. At the centre of the broken top edge is a cross-shaped arrangement of ring-…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy strap-end of Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) to medieval date. This strap-end is classified as a Thomas type B and probably dates from the late 8th to late 11th/early 12th century. The attachment end consists of two plates separated by a gap into which the leather strap would have fitted. The upper plate has slightly convex sides and a scalloped top edge; the back plate has square edges. At the top of the attachment end (in both plates) are two small circular rivet holes. The object narrows into the body, which has straight, parallel sides and is undecorated. T…

Worn and corroded fragment of an Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Small-long brooch.
The head consists of a square plate which is heavily corroded around the edges. Just off centre on the upper surface is a punched mark consisting of a double ring with central pellet; at each of the two top corners is a smaller mark with a single ring and central pellet. The bow is narrower than the head and consists of a short hump. The upper surface of the bow is decorated by a T-shaped groove. On the back of the head is a damaged catchplate (single perforated lug) with attached iron corrosion from t…

A fragment of a copper-alloy great square-headed brooch of probable late 5th to 6th century (Anglo-Saxon) date. The piece represents a side or terminal lobe from the footplate of the brooch. Such lobes of anthropomorphic form are a common feature of Hines' Group II brooches (see J. Hines; 1997; fig. 17). The piece is sub-oval in form, having slightly convex vertical edges. The upper surface bears a well-executed design in high relief, which takes the form a stylised human face. The upper head is tri-lobate. The uppermost lobe contains a circular depression; the lower two lobes contain…
