Base sherd from a vessel of a pinkish buff fabric with quartz inclusions. A yellow glaze survives in patches on the interior and exterior surfaces. Although this sherd resembles medieval Tees Valley ware, there is partial brown slip decoration visible under the glaze on the exterior, showing that it is a base fragment of a Staffordshire-type slipware mug. It therefore dates to the late 17th or 18th century.
