Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead seal of later Medieval to Post-Medieval date, c. 1400-1800. The seal is discoidal in shape bearing the impression of a lion's head. A hole, pointed oval in shape, can be found in the centre of the seal where the impression is deepest. On the reverse to the side of this hole are linear impressions probably made from cords or string, in a Y shape relative to the hole. The style of the lion could be late Medieval in date, though a Post-Medieval date is more likely.

A cast lead spindle whorl of the Medieval period, dating 1200-1500. The spindle whorl is biconical with a hole through the centre. Both faces are decorated in low relief in the same form. The decoration consists of a five-pointed star centred on the hole, with a dot in the centre of each arm. Similarly decorated spindle whorls are known from excavations on medieval sites, for example the deserted medieval village of Thrislington (topsoil find; Austin 1989, 137, fig. 58.2).
